The UMass Minutemen are still in search of their first win in their inaugural season in the NCAA's FBS, and Saturday likely provides their best shot at avoiding a winless campaign. UMass heads to Northeast Ohio for a game against Terry Bowden's Akron Zips team. The Zips have been in free fall in recent years, prompting their athletic leadership to take a flyer on the well-known Bowden. But his hiring at Akron hasn't exactly paid dividends in his first season, as a September blowout of Morgan State marks their only victory in 10 tries this year. Akron's defense is atrocious, and they've been relatively non-competitive in most of their MAC games this season.
Of course, it hasn't been any better for UMass, which has been routed in almost every game this season. The Minutemen are coming off a 63-0 loss to Northern Illinois, one of six teams in the MAC that is already bowl eligible. Needless to say, the Minutemen are near the bottom of every statistical category in the FBS. This may be their best shot at a win, but the Zips are still favored by 17 points in most places.
The game is not scheduled to be televised, but you can catch the radio broadcast on the following stations:
105.5 FM WEEI (Springfield)
1440 AM WVEI (Worcester)
95.9 FM WATD (South Shore)
91.1 FM WMUA (Amherst)
