White Sox Final Score: Cody Ross' Walkoff Shot Gives Boston 3-1 Win

Cody Ross hit his third three-run shot in two nights, and this time it was the last swing of a 3-1 win..

Clay Buchholz and Jose Quintana were the stars of an unexpected pitchers' duel. Clay Buchholz pushed the first three innings on just two hits, with his changeup his best pitch in an arsenal that was all on for the most part, while Quintana retired the first eight batters he faced before giving up a triple to Pedro Ciriaco with two outs in the third. The White Sox got the final out off of Ellsbury, ending the threat.

Things would finally go wrong for Clay Buchholz in the fourth. Surrendering a leadoff walk to Adam Dunn and a single to Paul Konerko behind him, Buchholz was able to limit the damage to just the one run, but it would prove an important run, as Quintana would put up strong inning after strong inning, leaving the Red Sox trailing late into the game.

The Sox would finally get a real shot in the seventh inning, as Quintana struggled to work his way through the middle of Boston's lineup. Singles from Dustin Pedroia, Adrian Gonzalez, and Cody Ross would load the bases with one out. Will Middlebrooks came to the plate and fought a lengthy battle against Quintana, and on the eighth pitch hit the ball sharply to short. Alexei Ramirez reacted quickly, diving to his left to make the grab and firing to second to start an inning-ending double play.

All the frustration, however, would finally come to an end in the ninth. Still facing the one-run deficit after the only inning of relief Clay Buchholz would need--an Alfredo Aceves ninth--the top of the lineup got rolling. Carl Crawford led off with a slapped single into right. A Dustin Pedroia ground ball would only result in one out at second, and Adrian Gonzalez shot a grounder through the right side behind it to put a runner in scoring position.

Up came Cody Ross, author of two three-run shots in the previous game. He took one pitch for a ball, one for a strike, and on his third got the one he was looking for: a fastball that started inside and was cutting over the plate. Ross took his Fenway-perfect swing, and the ball found itself right where his second shot of the night before left the park. His third three-run shot in two days, and this time a walkoff.

The Red Sox and White Sox are set to wrap up their four-game series Thursday night. We'll keep you up-to-date on all the action as it goes down in Fenway Park.

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0, Mid 9th -- Alfredo Aceves gets the Sox into the ninth still down only one despite a single and ground rule double causing serious trouble. The Sox have to consider themselves lucky that the ball--a long line drive that a sliding Cody Ross couldn't manage to make the grab on--made its way into the stands, or the run could've been in. As is, they've got three outs to get one run.

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0, End 8th -- The Sox strand a runner in scoring position after a one-out single from Mike Aviles and wild pitch from Quintana going to waste.

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0, Mid 8th -- Clay Buchholz gets through his eighth inning of one-run ball true to form, surrendering just the one isolated hit. The Sox have two innings to support him with anything.

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0, End 7th -- It's a missed opportunity of frankly tragic proportions. The Red Sox load the bases against Quintana in the seventh with Will Middlebrooks at the plate. The Red Sox' third baseman manages to work a lengthy battle against Quintana, and even gets good contact, but Alexei Ramirez dives to his left to stop the ball, then fires to second to start a double play that leaves the Red Sox still waiting for a run.

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0, Mid 7th -- Three more quick outs get Clay Buchholz and the Red Sox through the seventh inning in short order, but what they need now is offense.

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0, End 6th -- Three ground ball outs as the frustration continues for the Boston lineup. The Sox have only the Ciriaco triple to show off of Quintana twice through the lineup.

White Sox 1 Red Sox 0, Mid 6th -- Another inning, another hit for the White Sox. It's been a very sustainable pattern for Buchholz so long as he avoids the walks to help them move guys along.

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0, End 5th -- Cody Ross twice misses a homer, first around the wrong side of the Pesky Pole and next by going to the Monster with a fly ball, but it comes down just in front, leaving the Sox with another 1-2-3 frame.

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0, Mid 5th -- A ground rule double keeps Clay from a 1-2-3 inning again, but the White Sox stay stuck at one.

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0, End 4th -- A couple of fly balls are all the Red Sox can manage off of Quintana in the fourth. This is looking disturbingly similar to the habits of the 2011 team: 10 runs one game, zero the next.

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0, Mid 4th -- The White Sox finally break through for a run as Clay Buchholz suffers some leadoff trouble, putting runners on first and third with a walk and single to Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko. A sacrifice fly gets the run in, and gives the White Sox a small but important lead in what's shaping up to be a surprise pitchers' duel.

Red Sox 0, White Sox 0, End 3rd -- The Red Sox finally get their first hit of the night, with Pedro Ciriaco hitting a line drive that gets past Alejandro De Aza for three bases. Unfortunately, it comes with two outs, and Jacoby Ellsbury strikes out behind him to end the inning.

Red Sox 0, White Sox 0, Mid 3rd -- Buchholz is in rare form tonight, able to throw all of his pitches for strikes without living too dangerously up-in-the-zone. It's not quite the stuff of his no-hitters (as shown by the two hits), but it is the stuff that gems are made of. Two more strikeouts in the third push him up to four on the night, and right now the White Sox are struggling mightily with the changeup.

Red Sox 0, White Sox 0, End 2nd -- And Quintana has a second 1-2-3 inning, once again getting a bit lucky as good contact leads only to a line drive out for Cody Ross. Still, the other two outs were easy grounders, and it doesn't seem like the Sox are seeing him particularly well.

Red Sox 0, White Sox 0, Mid 2nd -- Buchholz enjoys a similar second inning, just replacing the strikeouts with ground outs. The former would be better, but especially in Fenway with a strong defensive infield the latter are certainly acceptable as well.

Red Sox 0, White Sox 0, End 1st -- Blink and you missed it. The first inning for the Red Sox takes just a few scant minutes and involves all of six pitches. Jacoby Ellsbury gets good contact to lead things off, but his line drive heads straight to Alex Rios in right field before Carl Crawford and Dustin Pedroia generate just weak contact behind him on two pitches a piece. Not the best of performances.

Red Sox 0, White Sox 0, Mid 1st -- Ladies and gentlemen, mark the day on your calendar, because the Red Sox finally--finally--have a scoreless top of the first in Fenway park. While Clay Buchholz would surrender a one-out singles, two-strike changeups dropped in against Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko are good to get him out of the inning with a zero on the board. It's a July 19th miracle!

Dustin Pedroia will bat third Thursday night, making his return to the Red Sox lineup as they aim to close out the series win over the Chicago White Sox.

It will be the first appearance for Dustin Pedroia since re-injuring his thumb early in the month, forcing him to the disabled list. While Pedroia's first thumb injury (and his decision to play through it) cost him a long period of ineffectiveness, the second baseman had been coming out of his slump over his last 10 games and, with the 15 days off, hopefully he'll only be playing at 100% this time 'round.

The interesting twist to this lineup, lacking Ortiz and up against a lefty, is that the Red Sox will turn to Pedro Ciriaco as their designated hitter. It's bizarre that circumstances have lead to a Triple-A middle infielder playing the position, but the fact is that, up against a lefty, it was probably the best choice for the Sox given the other options are players like Saltalamacchia, Sweeney, and Nava, who are all lefties or switch hitters with limited ability to hit left-handed pitching.

The Red Sox rode a tremendous performance from Cody Ross to a dominating 10-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

While the Sox once again found themselves behind in the first after Felix Doubront put two on with nobody out and surrendered an RBI single to Paul Konerko, they would quickly rebound. Jacoby Ellsbury would lead off the bottom half of the inning with a wall ball double, and then scored with two outs when Adrian Gonzalez found right field like Paul Konerko before him, knotting the game up at 1-1.

Doubront would escape from more trouble in the second, while rookie Pedro Hernandez seemed to settle down, allowing just a ground ball single in his second major league inning. Then came the third, and everything changed. Doubront held the White Sox to just a walk in the top half of the frame, and the top of the lineup took full advantage of the information they'd gained on Hernandez the first time through. Ellsbury and Crawford each singled up the middle to put two men on for Cody Ross, and when Hernandez tried to get a fastball in against him, Cody Ross cleared it out--out of the park, that is. There was never a question of distance or height, only fair or foul, and with the ball making it's way over everything and into the Boston night to the right of the left field foul pole, the Red Sox took a 4-1 lead.

The Cody Ross show was not done just yet, however. Once again presented with two men on in the fourth, Ross stepped to the plate and got an even better pitch to hit from Hernandez--a changeup that stayed up and over the plate. Once again, Ross swung big, and once again, he connected. This time there was no question of fair or foul, and once again the ball completely left the confines of Fenway park. The coup de grace would come immediately after, as Adrian Gonzalez took a low fastball and sent it into the Monster seats to make it back-to-back shots and an 8-1 lead.

Gonzalez would add another pair of runs later, knocking in Carl Crawford and Cody Ross, but with the White Sox mounting no real threat at any point, the Sox already had the win in the bag.

The Red Sox and White Sox are ready to start the third game of their four-game set.

We'll keep you up-to-date on all the action as it goes down in Fenway Park.

Red Sox 10, White Sox 1, End 8th -- A 1-2-3 inning sends it quickly into the ninth, where Andrew Miller will try to wrap things up for Boston.

Red Sox 10, White Sox 1, Mid 8th -- Mark Melancon has another quick, clean inning, dropping his ERA below six. He's been untouchable since coming back from the minors, to the point where he should really get some more interesting outings in closer games.

Red Sox 10, White Sox 1, End 7th -- Pedro Ciriaco seems to have reversed course. Originally succeeding on junk that got through the infield--or often enough simply got to the infielders slowly enough--Ciriaco is now failing to reach base despite hitting the ball hard. It's actually a good sign for the shortstop, suggesting there might be more to his bat than good luck. For now it's an out that's part of a scoreless eighth, but in an inning that actually matters a line drive is a lot more likely to result in a two-run single than a weak ground ball is.

Red Sox 10, White Sox 1, Mid 7th -- Matt Albers comes into the game for Felix Doubront and gets the Sox a quick 1-2-3 frame.

Red Sox 10, White Sox 1, End 6th -- Once again the top of the lineup does damage for the Sox. Carl Crawford gets things started by being damaged, getting hit by a 92 MPH offering to give the Sox a leadoff baserunner. Cody Ross follows up by making a bid for his third shot of the night, but instead simply planting the ball off the wall to put runners on second and third for Adrian Gonzalez. While the first baseman ends up falling behind early, he fouls off pitch after pitch and then finally gets one to hit, finding the gap in right-center field to bring both men home and extend the Sox' already large lead by another couple of runs.

Red Sox 8, White Sox 1, Mid 6th -- Adrian Gonzalez comes in to glove a weak ground ball with one down an one on and starts a nice 3-5-1 double play to end the sixth inning with the minimum number of batters faced for Felix Doubront. Still, his pitch count is up around 100, leaving him unlikely to return for a seventh.

Red Sox 8, White Sox 1, End 5th -- Pedro Hernandez is finally allowed to leave the mound after a single from Mauro Gomez and walk allowed to Mike Aviles. His replacement gets three outs in short order, but needs a line drive from Pedro Ciriaco right to Dayan Viciedo to end it.

Red Sox 8, White Sox 1, Mid 5th -- Felix Doubront needs just 10 pitches to get through another 1-2-3 inning in the fifth. He's settled in nicely, even if he's still not exactly baffling batters the way he did early in the year.

Red Sox 8, White Sox 1, End 4th -- And just like that, after a slump that seemed to be dragging on for Cody Ross, he has a pair of three-run shots in back-to-back innings.

This time it's Pedro Ciriaco on base with Jacoby Ellsbury rather than Carl Crawford, but the actual homer isn't too different. It comes on a changeup rather than a fastball, and catches a bit more of the plate, but it's still a total no-doubter that gets up and over everything in left, possibly denting a car in the parking lot we've all seen so many times.

The other difference in the fourth is that this time Ross gets some accompaniment from about the best source possible: Adrian Gonzalez. Despite getting his 0-1 fastball down, Pedro Hernandez leaves it over the plate and Gonzalez is all-too-happy to go get it, putting a surprisingly large jolt on the ball and knocking it to the opposite field for a Monster seat homer much like the one he hit in the first game of the series. A very positive sign.

Red Sox 4, White Sox 1, Mid 4th -- The White Sox finally go down in order for Felix Doubront, who might at least be able to go six innings now. Pitch count has often been an issue for him, but tonight it's just a matter of baserunners rather than long battles.

Red Sox 4, White Sox 1, End 3rd -- The top of the lineup gets it done, with Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford once again providing sparks. The outfield combo both go up-the-middle for hits, and while neither was exactly a ringing shot, Carl's likely would have been had his bat not broken, and it gets the job done either way.

The spark, however, apparently did more than just start a fire. It lit Cody Ross' fuse. Pedro Hernandez made the mistake of trying to get a fastball in on Ross and not absolutely burying it. The result is a tremendous moonshot the likes of which only seem to come from Cody Ross facing a lefty, up and over everything to left and giving the Sox a nice three-run lead.

Red Sox 1, White Sox 1, Mid 3rd -- Unfortunately, Felix Doubront's easiest inning of the night still features a walk and leaves him at 60 pitches come the third out. But with some of the outings the Sox have received lately they won't complain about one run in three innings.

Red Sox 1, White Sox 1, End 2nd -- Kelly Shoppach's two-out base hit begs the question why the catcher with a bat that's been on fire since the beginning of the season and who absolutely destroys lefties is batting eighth in the lineup tonight. Given that all three batters around him failed to reach base it's not really a costly distinction just yet, but it's just not very good lineup construction by Bobby Valentine.

Red Sox 1, White Sox 1, Mid 2nd -- Doubront works through an up-and-down second inning to escape with the tie intact. While the outs were the sort you want to see--two pop-ups and a strikeout of Alejandro De Aza, who had taken him to the wall in the first--they were interspersed with a flair into center field for a single and a four-pitch walk. There's nothing coming easy for the Sox rotation these days.

Red Sox 1, White Sox 1, End 1st -- And the Red Sox strike back with almost a carbon copy of the Chicago first. Jacoby Ellsbury also finds the wall in left field, though his legs get him to second before the ball can be brought in. While the next two at bats would ultimately result in two outs, once again it was the first baseman coming to the plate and knocking a hit into right field that scored the run. Ellsbury and Gonzalez keep right on rolling--certainly a good sign for a team that's missed their production for the better part of the year (if not under the same circumstances).

White Sox 1, Red Sox 0, Mid 1st -- It wouldn't be a Fenway first if it didn't feature a run for the opposition. Felix Doubront gets himself in deep water early on by giving up a wall ball single (played excellently by Carl Crawford to prevent extra bases) and a line drive up the middle that put runners on first and second without an out. Though Adam Dunn would provide a much-needed GIDP, a pitch left too high to Paul Konerko is a recipe for failure this year, and the first baseman did not disappoint, slapping a single to right that plated the run.

It's the tenth straight game in Fenway Park with a run scoring in the first (per the illustrious Tim Britton), so if the Sox aren't playing great baseball, they've at least got their sights set on the record books.

The Red Sox will look to regain control of their four-game set against the Chicago White Sox Wednesday night as they send Felix Doubront to the mound against Pedro Hernandez. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. EST with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.

Mauro Gomez, called up today to replace David Ortiz after the latter was placed on the 15-day DL with a heel injury, will take over at designated hitter for the night. It's a much more appropriate position than third or even first for the defensively challenged right-handed hitter.

Gomez will be helped by the fact that he gets to face the left-handed rookie Pedro Hernandez, who only recently made the jump from Double-A to Triple-A. The Sox are, as usual, looking to make the lefty as uncomfortable as possible on the mound, stacking the lineup with as many right-handed hitters as possible.

Despite saying he feels alright which was backed-up by a negative MRI on his Achilles tendon, Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will be placed on the disable list, manager Bobby Valentine told Boston's WEEI on Wednesday. Minor-leaguer Mauro Gomez has been called up to replace Ortiz on the roster.

On Monday, Ortiz was hurt while rounding second base on a home run by teammate Adrain Gonzalez. Ortiz hobbled to home plate, but after the game said he was fine. His claim was supported the following day when an MRI showed no tear or rupture, however, the 36-year-old was seen wearing a walking boot and admitted he may miss a week.

Ortiz's DL stint is retroactive from July 17.
