Injured Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Carpenter has gotten his rehab assignment in Double-A Portland, according to a report (via Pete Abraham).

Carpenter, a right-handed reliever, was acquired by the Red Sox from the Chicago Cubs as compensation for former Boston general manager Theo Epstein. Carpenter had surgery during the spring to remove a bone spur from his throwing elbow. He only threw two innings during Spring Training before the surgery.

Carpenter pitched in 10 games for the Cubs in his rookie season in 2011 and had a 2.79 ERA in 9.2 innings.

The Boston Red Sox have set a portion of their pitching rotation for the second half of the season, as according to Peter Abraham, the Red Sox will go with Franklin Morales in the team's second-half opener against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Following Morales, Clay Buchholz will make his much-needed return to the Boston rotation after an injury, followed by Josh Beckett on Sunday.

As for who will round out the rotation, the final two spots have not been announced, but signs point toward Jon Lester and Felix Doubront getting the final two spots.

The Sox will enter the All-Star break at an incredibly disappointing 43-43 after a 7-3 loss to the New York Yankees.

To nobody's great surprise, the Yankees once again scored in the first inning, staying amusingly true to their pattern of putting up one less in each game: first five, then four, then three, and tonight two runs off of Jon Lester. The damage was done early, as the first three batters reached, and while a bad play by Mauro Gomez perhaps cost Lester a double play and, as a result, a run, it was still a poor effort by the southpaw.

With another run coming in the second, Lester finally seemed to settle down in the third and fourth innings, striking out the side to put an exclamation mark on the fourth. Meanwhile, the Sox had gotten him a couple of runs back, as Pedro Ciriaco scored when Derek Jeter dropped a pop-up in the first, and then again when Jeter failed to throw him out on a fairly routine ground ball and David Ortiz hit a long double to left.

Just when the Sox were getting close, however, Lester fell apart again. A single and a triple to the triangle in the fifth brought a fourth run in to score, and after a walk and single brought in a fifth his night was over, with five runs (four earned) on the board in just 4.1 innings.

While Boston wasn't showing any real sign of coming back in the next couple of innings, the Yankees didn't let that stop them from building their lead. It was Andruw Jones who did it, striking again with his fourth homer of the series hit to left into the Monster seats off of Scott Atchison. With Nick Swisher already on base, the Sox' deficit grew to five runs.

The Sox would finally score again in the eighth, but have an opportunity to really get back in it go by the wayside, as Mike Aviles just missed a thee-run homer, instead settling for a wall ball double that brought one home, and Daniel Nava just missed catching some wall with Aviles and Mauro Gomez in scoring position, ending the inning with a long fly to left.

The Boston Red Sox really needed a good start out of Jon Lester to give them some momentum going into the All-Star break. They didn't get it.

Instead, Lester got knocked around by the Bronx Bombers, giving up five runs (four earned) in just 4 1/3 innings on nine hits and two walks. Scott Atchison didn't provide much relief in Lester's stead, surrendering two runs in just two innings.

The New York Yankees on the other hand received a terrific outing from their sophomore star Ivan Nova, who only allowed two runs in six frames. Nova also kept the ball out of reach all night, striking out 10 Red Sox.

Pedro Ciriaco was perhaps the lone bright spot for Beantown going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. David Ortiz also added a double and a RBI to his totals while Nick Punto had two hits.

The Red Sox now go into the break looking at a major deficit in the AL East while only being 2 1/2 games out of the AL Wild Card spot. It's probably the best time for a few days off, considering all the scrutiny that's about to be heaped on them.

The Sox and Yankees are ready to wrap up the first half of the series with the fourth game of their series in Fenway Park.

We'll keep you up-to-date on all the action as it goes down in Boston.

Yankees 7, Red Sox 3, End 8th -- The Sox finally score again, but in an inning where they came tantalizingly close to really making this a game again, it smacks of too little, too late. After putting two men on with two outs, the Sox saw Mike Aviles hit the ball a long way to left. It doesn't have quite enough height, however, catching the Monster just a foot short of a home run. The RBI double gets them their third run before Daniel Nava goes to the same area. While his ball has the height, however, it doesn't quite have the distance, allowing Curtis Granderson to make the play up against the wall.

Yankees 7, Red Sox 2, Mid 8th -- Mark Melancon gives up a couple hard-hit balls around a pair of strikeouts, but with two down Pedro Ciriaco once again leaves his mark on the game, making a tremendous diving play to snag a low line drive off the bat of Alex Rodriguez, robbing him of a surefire base hit.

Yankees 7, Red Sox 2, End 7th -- A pair of leadoff walks do nothing to help Boston's situation in the score line, as Pedro Ciriaco grounds out, David Ortiz goes down swinging, and Nick Punto hits one to Jeter to end the inning.

Yankees 7, Red Sox 2, Mid 7th -- Andruw Jones is having a field <strike>day </strike>weekend in Fenway, and may have just put the nail in this particular coffin. Once again just completely destroying a pitch--this time off Scott Atchison--Jones makes it a five-run game with just nine outs to go. The Sox have to rally in a hurry, or this one's over.

Yankees 5, Red Sox 2, End 6th -- Ivan Nova, unfortunately, isn't flinching, and is doing a great job of taking advantage of the lack of patience shown by plate vision shown by Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Mauro Gomez, picking up another pair of strikeouts on the free-swingers in a 1-2-3 sixth.

Yankees 5, Red Sox 2, Mid 6th -- Scott Atchison works around a leadoff single despite some difficulty turning double plays behind him, keeping the Sox in the game for the sixth inning.

Yankees 5, Red Sox 2, End 5th -- Pedro Ciriaco manages to reach base again, singling up the middle. Tonight, though, his energy doesn't seem to be enough for the Sox, as David Ortiz grounds to second to start the double play. Nick Punto manages to knock a ball off Mark Teixeira's glove for a hit, but with Cody Ross striking out behind him the inning ends without any much-needed runs.

Yankees 5, Red Sox 2, Mid 5th -- And just like that, Lester falls to pieces again. A leadoff single scores when the next batter, Alex Rodriguez, hits a long fly ball into the triangle, where Ryan Sweeney goes down after colliding with the wall trying to make a catch on what ends up a triple. He stays in the game to watch Lester strike Robinson Cano out, but then a walk and an Andruw Jones RBI single spell the end to the southpaw's unfortunate night and leave the Sox down by three.

Yankees 3, Red Sox 2, End 4th -- The bottom of the Boston lineup hit their pop-ups to the wrong place, sending them back of first base rather than second, where Jeter would be waiting to drop them. As is, it's an unproductive 1-2-3 inning.

Yankees 3, Red Sox 2, Mid 4th -- Jon Lester suddenly seems to be finding his stride, striking out the side in the fourth. If he can keep it up through the end of his night, it'll be a start reminiscent of his last outing in Oakland: first inning struggles that lead to general domination.

Yankees 3, Red Sox 2, End 3rd -- It's once again Derek Jeter helping the Red Sox to a run in the second. This time the help comes when he can't get Pedro Ciriaco out on a ground ball to his left--always Jeter's trouble spot--allowing David Ortiz to score him when he goes off the wall in left. Another poor play by Jeter on a Nick Punto ground ball leads to another generously-scored infield single, but the Sox don't bring in a run despite loading the bases with one out, as Jarrod Saltalamacchia watches a called strike three and Ryan Sweeney grounds out to first to end it.

Yankees 3, Red Sox 1, Mid 3rd -- A single that gets under Nick Punto's glove at third is all the Yankees get in the top of the third. You may have noticed that Nick Punto was not originally in this game, which brings us to the bad news: Adrian Gonzalez has left the game due to illness, leaving Nick Punto batting...cleanup.

Yankees 3, Red Sox 1, End 2nd -- Ivan Nova gets the bottom of the order 1-2-3 with three strikeouts. Not an impressive performance from the offense, that, with Gomez swinging at a pitch so far outside that it could have started out as a pickoff throw had there been anyone on first.

Yankees 3, Red Sox 1, Mid 2nd -- A leadoff double from Jayson Nix ends up costing Lester a third run in the second after a passed ball and decently long fly ball from Chris Stewart is enough to get him home, with Daniel Nava's throw hitting Nix to prevent a play at the plate.

Yankees 2, Red Sox 1, End 1st -- Derek Jeter's defense is...divisive, to put it nicely. Lauded for years by mainstream pundits for his ability to make plays that look amazing and criticized by analysts who note that they only look spectacular because he's got so little in the way of range, even Jeter's greatest critics don't question his ability to make the basic play. Tonight, however, he's 0-for-1. After Pedro Ciriaco once again brought his energy to the game with an infield single and stolen base to get into scoring position, Cody Ross came to the plate and popped one up behind short. Jeter stepped back, measured it, and let it bounce off his glove, bringing Ciriaco home for the run.

Yankees 2, Red Sox 0, Mid 1st -- Well, that was predictable. After scoring five runs in the first inning of the first game, four runs in the game two, and three in game three, the Yankees now have two in game four. The Baseball Gods work in mysterious ways. Once again the damage could have been limited by the defense, though Lester was certainly not particularly good, giving up two singles, a double, and a walk before the second out was recorded. Still, with a run already on the board and the bases loaded, Lester got the ground ball he needed.

The problem is that it came to Mauro Gomez, who is not really a third baseman. Making the mistake of trying to take the ball to third rather than fire to second or home, Gomez then put his throw in the dirt, three-hopping it to Adrian Gonzalez at first, missing the opportunity for the double play.

The Sox can only hope for a series split tonight as they take on the New York Yankees in Fenway Park. First pitch is at 8:05 p.m. EST with broadcasts on ESPN and WEEI.

Both Mauro Gomez and Pedro Ciriaco will be back in the lineup for the Red Sox one night after they lifted the Sox to their first win in six games.

Presumably Gomez' stay will only last as long as Will Middlebrooks' injury continues to keep him out, at least as far as starting at third is considered given Gomez' moribund glove. For Ciriaco, however, this might be the beginning of a big opportunity. With Mike Aviles' numbers having taken a nosedive after the first few weeks of the season, Ciriaco at least gives the Sox an element of the unknown quantity. Ciriaco doesn't exactly come with much in the way of expectations given his mediocre minor league career and complete lack of hype, but he's got a slick glove and can't do that much worse than Aviles at the plate. For now they both fit in the lineup, but over the next couple of weeks if Ciriaco proves himself and Aviles doesn't, who's to say?

In other words: what's there to lose?

After five games of frustration, the Red Sox finally got back in the win column, taking a 9-5 victory over the New York Yankees thanks to some big contributions from unlikely sources.

Things would get worse before they got better for the Sox, however, as the Yankees once again jumped all over them in the first. Or, perhaps more accurately, the Sox let themselves get run over yet again, as Mauro Gomez made two errors on one play and then failed to field a bunt to put two men on before an out was recorded. Up came Mark Teixeira, and on the second pitch the Sox found themselves down 3-0 before they had recorded an out thanks to a big homer to dead center.

If Felix Doubront had been responsible for the homer, the three runs were still not representative of how he'd pitched, however, and he did his best to show the truth of that over the next five innings. While Mauro Gomez and Pedro Ciriaco were busy helping the Sox to claw back into the game with a run in the third and another in the fifth, Doubront set about retiring Yankees, often by way of the strikeout. Through the end of the sixth, Doubront would allow just two more baserunners while striking out six batters to keep the Sox alive.

Then came the bottom of the sixth. While the Sox had already seen plenty in the way of backups and call-ups producing results, the last week or so had seen a bit of a drop off in that respect. Suddenly, however, they've found another wave. Already responsible for the first two runs, Mauro Gomez and Pedro Ciriaco would strike again in the sixth, with the former loading the bases with a one-out single and the latter clearing them with a double past third, giving the Sox a 5-3 lead.

The seventh would prove even more productive. After Ryan Sweeney tripled home Adrian Gonzalez, Mauro Gomez knocked Sweeney in and then scored on a hard hit ground ball by Pedro Ciriaco that bounced off Jayson Nix' glove at third. It was scored an error, but could easily have been another big hit for the call-up, who then stole third and scampered home when the throw ended up in left field, making a quick curtain call as Fenway chanted his name.

Clayton Mortensen made a bit of a mess of things by loading the bases with one out in the eighth before Vicente Padilla quickly got two pop-ups in foul territory to end the inning, and Alfredo Aceves gave up a solo shot to Eric Chavez in the ninth, but the Sox had plenty of cushion to survive the hit, finally snapping their lengthy losing streak.
