On a very hot day for racing in the 2012 Boston Marathon, the times were not record-breaking in the 116th version of the event. Kenyans swept the top three places of the Men's and Women's events.

The top American finisher was Jason Hartmann (Boulder, Colo.) in fourth place with a time of 2:14:31. Wesley Korir's time of 2:12:40 was good enough for the victory on Monday.

On the Women's side, the top American finisher was Japanese-born Mayumi Fujita (2:39:11), who came in seventh. Sheri L. Piers (Maine) came in 10th with a time of 2:41:55. Kenya's Sharon Cherop had the best time with 2:31:50.

No American has won the Boston Marathon since Lisa Larsen Weidenbach won the Women's event in 1985. The last American man to win the race was Greg Meyer in 1983. Racers from Kenya and Ethiopia have dominated the Boston Marathon in recent times, having won the men's event 23 of the last 25 Marathons and 14 of the last 16 Women's Marathons.

A heat wave couldn't keep the 2012 Boston Marathon from providing excitement.

The women's division once again came down to the final stretch, when Sharon Cherop out-sprinted fellow Kenyan Jemima Jelagat Sumgong. Cherop and Sumgong were neck and neck with 600 meters remaining, but Cherop put in her finishing kick at that point to give herself a little cushion. It was good she provided herself cushion, because Sumgong had one last rush left in her and pulled within two seconds of the lead by the time the two crossed the finish line.

Battling through temperatures that reached the 80s, Cherop's winning time (2 hours, 31 minutes, 50seconds) was Boston's slowest since 1985.

In the men's division, Wesley Korir prevailed with a time of 2 hours, 12 minutes, 41 seconds. Last year's winner, Geoffrey Mutai, withdrew from the event during the 18th mile due to cramps.

Faced with running 26.2 miles in temperatures that reached the 80s, Wesley Korir's winning time at the 2012 Boston Marathon was the second-slowest to capture the event since 1985.

One year after Geoffrey Mutai set a course record, Korir battled through the heat to finish the course at an unofficial time of 2:12:40. Mutai led after 18 miles but was forced to withdraw at that point with cramps brought on by the heat, opening the door for Korir to become the 19th Kenyan winner in the past 22 years at the Boston Marathon.

The harsh temperatures caused more than 4,000 runners to withdraw prior to the race's start. Many others, including Mutai, withdrew during the event.

Sharon Cherop of Kenya won the women's division with an unofficial time of 2:31:50. Her winning time was the slowest in Boston since 1985.

Sharon Cherop of Kenya battled fierce heat to win the women's division at the 2012 Boston Marathon with an unofficial time of 2:31:50.

Temperatures rose as high as 78 degrees, contributing to Cherop's relatively slow winning time, which was the slowest at the Boston Marathon since 1985.

Approximately 4,300 runners withdrew from the race prior to its start because of temperatures expected to reach the mid-80s, and others -- including defending men's champion Geoffrey Mutai -- withdrew during the middle of the event. Race officials even offered a deferment into next year's race for those who felt the heat was too much.

Fellow Kenyan Wesley Korir took the men's division with an unofficial time of 2:12:40, the second-slowest winning time in Boston since 1985. Mutai withdrew after 18 miles with cramps as temperatures exceeded 80 degrees.

An unusually hot Boston Marathon caused thousands to withdraw, including Geoffrey Mutai, last year's winner. But one runner persevered through the heat better than anyone else.

Wesley Korir of Kenya battled through temperatures in the mid-80s to win the men's division with an unofficial time of 2:12:40.

Mutai won the 2011 Boston Marathon in record time and was leading after 18 miles this year, but he was forced to pull out of the event with cramps. Due to the heat, race officials offered runners a deferment into next year's race if they wanted to withdraw this year. The result was that only 22,426 of the almost 27,000 people who registered actually began the race, and Mutai was one of many forced by the heat to withdraw after the race began.

Sharon Cherop of Kenya won the women's division with an unofficial time of 2:31:50. Her winning time was the slowest at the Boston Marathon since 1985.

In the 116th Annual running of the Boston Marathon, a huge happening has taken hold.

Geoffrey Mutai, the world's number-one marathoner has pulled out of the race due to cramps, according to Ryan Hudson via twitter.

The 30-year-old was in the lead before having to withdraw.

The Kenya native is the defending Boston Marathon champion after winning it in 2011 with a time of 2:03:02, a course record.

He also won the New York City Marathon later in the same year in 2:05:05, another record for the event.

Mutai was a favorite coming into the race, so this is certainly a stunning and event-altering injury. It's more than fair to wonder how the unusual heat for this time of year is effecting Mutai and the cramps he's experiencing.

It's too bad his journey had to come to an end like this, but thus is the life of a marathon runner.

In the 116th Annual Boston Marathon, we have an official record.

In the Men's Wheelchair Division, Joshua Cassidy has finished as the winner with a time of 1:18:25. The Canadian set the record on a day that is expected to reach record temperatures in Boston, 86 degrees being the predicted high for the afternoon.

Cassidy bested the previous record by two seconds. Kurt Fearnley of Austria also put forth a herculean effort coming in second, with a time of 1:21:39.

On the women's side of the ledger, Shirley Reilly was the best of the bunch. In a furious race to the finish line, Reilly barely beat Wakako Tsuchida of Japan by one hundredth of a second.

Reilly won in front of her home country with the time of 1:37:36. Diane Roy rounded out the top three with a time of 1:42:37.
