After a strong burst of energy to begin the third and final frame, the Rangers would regain the lead at the 3:14 mark when Marian Gaborik stuffed it into a yawning goal after Thomas had made a stop on the other side of the net mouth. It would be the 32nd tally of the campaign for the Slovakian born winger who continues to light up the score sheet for the first place Rangers.

The Bruins would come right back midway through the third when some slick puck movement from the top line would result in David Krejci’s 17th goal of the season. Unfortunately, only 0:39 seconds later, the Blueshirts would answer when Derek Stepan snapped one over the glove of Thomas to give New York a 4-3 lead with less than eight minutes left to play. Whilst Thomas held his own for the better part of Sunday’s contest, Stepan’s go-ahead tally is simply one that the former Vezina winner cannot let get past him less than a minute after his team tied the score.

Boston would pull Thomas and apply a fair amount of pressure on Lundqvist as the time ticked off the clock, but they would just run out of time as the Rangers held on for their third win in as many tries against the B’s this season.

The injury-riddled Bruins fought hard this afternoon against one of the best teams in the entire NHL, but in the end, the Rangers simply proved themselves the better team.

These two squads will meet up once more this season, on April 1, right back at Madison Square Garden.

The B’s got out to a much hotter start in the second frame, controlling play from the opening puck drop. At the 1:40 mark, it was Caron who would blast a slapshot past Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist to even the score at two.

Boston would continue to out-work the Rangers throughout the balance of the second period, outshooting New York by a 10-3 margin. Unfortunately for the Black and Gold, Henrik Lundqvist stood tall in the Rangers’ goal and did not allow the Bruins to take a lead into the second intermission.

Head Coach Claude Julien is once again looking brilliant for the timing of his timeout, as ever since, the Bruins have dominated play in the Big Apple.

On Sunday afternoon the Boston Bruins (or what’s left of them) walked (or limped) into Madison Square Garden for a date with the number one team in the Eastern Conference. A Boston squad missing a full quarter of it’s regulars took on a tough Rangers squad in hopes or turning around their recent two-month-long slump.

It didn’t look good for Boston in the first as the Blueshirts tallied two quick goals in the first 6:15 of the game. First it was low-scoring defenseman Anton Stralman whose wrist shot found it’s way through a screen and past Boston goaltender Tim Thomas. A mere seventy seconds later the Rangers would add to their lead when Carl Hagelin redirected a centering pass into the Bruins’ net.

Seeing his team go down two goals in such a pivotal contest, Boston bench boss Claude Julien opted to take his timeout immediately after the second New York tally. The move would pay immediate divends for a B’s squad that would account for the next six shots on goal, including Benoit Pouliot’s 10th mark of the season after some tough forechecking from Jordan Caron. Three fights and a busted glass panel later, these two Eastern Conference behemoths went to the rooms with New York ahead 2-1.

Three more injuries strike the Bruins, including Andrew Ference and Tuukka Rask who will not join the Bruins on their two-game road trip, including this afternoon against the Rangers. Daniel Paille is questionable.

Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli mentioned last Monday that picking up two defenseman at the trade deadline was huge because "defensemen tend to drop like flies."

However, there was no way he would have thought Saturday could have ended the way it did.

The Bruins fell to the New York Islanders--a team they had previously outscored 12-2 in their last two meetings--3-2 in Boston.

But they lost more than just the game.

Bruins did lose a defenseman, Andrew Ference to a lower body, and he will not be traveling with the team as they enter into a two-game road trip to visit the Rangers today and the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

That's okay. Chiarelli accounted for that.

What he couldn't have predicted was that goaltender Tuukka Rask would go down to the ice in a heap after what looked like a routine save attempt. After starting into his usual butterfly save, he twitched slightly and immediately called trainers over, throwing his glove off in the process. He was helped off the ice, but has no time table for his return, leaving with a "left leg injury."

That's not good news for the team that plays their remaining 19 games in 34 days.

One of those games happens to be this afternoon against the New York Rangers--the top team in the Conference, holding a ten point lead over the Bruins.

"We’re fine, we’re definitely fine," Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk said after last night's game. "Once we get those goals, nobody will be saying anything about how you are going to get two wins in a row – it’s [you’re] a contender again and we are. I feel everybody is confident in this room that we can do it again."

The puck drops at 12:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on NBC, TSN2, and RDSIand aired on 98.5 The Sports Hub.
