These days, who doesn't want a piece of Rob Gronkowski? The second-year tight end had a breakout year under Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots and quickly emerged as one of the best, if not the top, tight ends in the game.

Kobe Bryant made it clear that he wants Gronk too, telling the Patriots tight end -- who was in attendance as Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers took on the Boston Celtics at TD Garden on Thursday night -- that he should join his favorite football team.

"I said the Eagles need a tight end, that's what I told him. I'm recruiting," Bryant said following Thursdays' 88-87 overtime victory. "He's a phenomenally talented player, just a freak athlete."

When Kobe -- a top five player in the history of the NBA and one of the most iconic athletes of his time -- is saying things like that about you, well, you must be doing something right. No doubt, Gronk certainly is.

It's definitely good to see someone like Bryant recognizing Gronk, as he was going back and forth with the record-breaking tight end all throughout Thursday's game.

"He shot it at me, I shot it back," Bryant said. "It's fun to have those conversations with athletes that you respect."

BOSTON - Kobe Bryant didn't know what the heck we were talking about. When the Los Angeles Lakers star guard sat down for postgame interviews following his team's 88-87 win over the Boston Celtics on Thursday, he faced a barrage of questions -- not about the game, but about Harvard grad and the New York Knicks newest sensation, Jeremy Lin.

"What? I have no idea, I mean I know who he is, but I don't really know what's going on too much with that," Bryant said when asked about Lin and what he's done in the past week.

Well, Kobe, here's a crash course on Lin. Basically, he's become the NBA's version of Tim Tebow. All he does is win. In his last three games, Lin has averaged 25.3 points and 8.3 assists in extended minutes. In short, he's been "Linning."

You would be hard pressed to find basketball fans who haven't heard of Lin by now. After all, it's been extremely overhyped by the New York media, and even some in the national media have taken a bite into the Asian rising star.

Not Kobe, though. When asked again about Lin, he maintained his answer of ignorance.

"I don't even know what he's done, like I have no idea what you guys are talking about," Kobe insisted. "I'll take a look at it tonight, though."

Bryant and the Lakers travel to the Big Apple to face Lin and the Knicks on Friday night, a game that Kobe knows his team needs to beat to maintain its new-found success.

"Well, we have to get a win. We have to go in there and play well. You know, we've played extremely poorly against teams that have been undermanned. Tomorrow we have to try to break that."

Kobe Bryant has played many a game against the rival Boston Celtics, but despite the natural rivalry, the Los Angeles Lakers legend has developed a love/hate relationship with the team that cost him a championship back in 2007-08.

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. It's a saying used in war, and to some degree, in basketball. Kobe Bryant lives by this saying, at least when it comes to his relationship with the rival Boston Celtics.

Bryant, a lifelong player-turned-legend for the Los Angeles Lakers, has a long history with the Celtics. Regular season, playoffs, NBA Finals. Kobe has seen it all against the green team. And of course, the C's robbed him of a title in 2008. Despite all of that, Kobe doesn't hate the Celtics.

"It's been great," Bryant said about playing in the Celtics-Lakers rivalry. "It's been a dream come true, you know, growing up and watching it. Here I am, part of it. It's great. The only difference, though, between us and the '80's is that guys over there in the other locker room I know and like. That's the difference between this time around and the '80's."

Bryant has always stepped up his game against the Celtics, a sign of a true Lakers great. Coming into Thursday night's game between the Lakers and Celtics at TD Garden, Bryant had averaged 25.4 points in 24 career regular season contests against Boston. No doubt, his high level of play against Boston has been aided by years of experience.

"We know each other so well," said Bryant. "We know what's coming before it happens."

Bryant, who led all scorers with 27 points, didn't score for the first nine-plus minutes of Thursday's game before making a 23-foot jump shot. Bryant added three free throws and an 11-foot fader in the final two minutes of the opening quarter to bring his point total up to seven.

Again, Bryant was held scoreless for much of the second quarter, not finding his way back onto the scoreboard until the 5:36 mark of the period, when he hit a step back 19-foot jump shot. Kobe added another step back jumper at 4:14 of the quarter to bring his first half scoring total up to 11. Not bad, really. Holding the league's leading scorer to 11 in a half? Not great, but pretty good.

But you can only contain the beast for so long. Eventually, Kobe is going to be Kobe. In the second half, Bryant went off for 16 points, 12 of which came in the third quarter. He looked like the Kobe of old, shaking off defenders and making contested jumpers from all angles. Surprising? Not at all. You just can't escape the inevitable.

Bryant even put his athleticism on display when he executed a ferocious alley-oop jump on a pass from Pau Gasol with 8:04 to play in the third quarter, tying the game at 53-53. Bryant went on to score eight of the Lakers' final 14 points in the quarter. Kobe only scored four more points in the game, two in the fourth and two in overtime, but the damage had already been done.

Of course, Kobe was happy to beat the Celtics, but with the way the Lakers' season had been going (they entered the game against the Celtics with a 14-11 record), Bryant wouldn't classify it as the team's best win. All in all, it was OK.

"Anywhere right now is our best win of the year," he said. "We did OK, we did well. Our execution in the fourth is still very poor towards what we need to accomplish. But, you know, all in all I thought it was a good defensive effort."

Bryant made 11-of-24 field goals, all of which came on two-pointers or free throws. As a team, the Lakers made just 1-of-15 three-point attempts. The key to the win, though, was the advantage in the rebounding category (55-45).

"Extremely. You know, that's what's going to get us W's, taking advantage on the glass and also keeping them off the offensive boards. We only gave up 13 second chance points tonight, which normally it's up in the 25-point, 30 range."

Bryant certainly didn't surprise anyone with his performance, but he sure did wow fans. That's what all have come to expect from Kobe, a Hall of Fame lock and arguably one of the top five players ever to play the game. Bryant recently passed former teammate (and then rival) Shaquille O'Neal to move into fifth place on the NBA's All-Time scoring list.

There isn't an accomplishment of that magnitude that is comparable for any current member of the Celtics, but Kobe's counterpart, Paul Pierce, recently passed Larry Bird to move into second place on the C's all-time scoring list Tuesday.

"I just told him congratulations," Bryant said about Pierce's scoring milestone. "That just means we're both getting very old. He just congratulated me on my record or whatever. It was good to see it."

Love him or hate him (and as Celtics fans, it's understood if you hate him), you have to respect what he has done on the court. Bryant is one of the all-time greats, and without him, the glorious rivalry between the Celtics and Lakers may have died after the '80's. He's a player that Celtics fans love to hate. That's OK, because the feeling's likely mutual for Kobe.

The Boston Celtics took an 82-80 lead late with just over a minute left to go in Thursday night's game against the Los Angeles Lakers. The C's held on to the lead until the final seconds of regulation, when Pau Gasol tipped in a rebound off a missed Kobe Bryant fadeaway to send the game to overtime.

In OT, Gasol blocked a Ray Allen tip attempt off a Paul Pierce miss to seal the game for the Lakers. You can check out the full carnage below the jump.

BOSTON - Kobe Bryant could only be kept at bay for so long. Bryant wasn't much of a factor in the very early stages of the game, but Kobe locked in for the final three quarters to lead the Los Angeles Lakers past the Boston Celtics, 88-87, in overtime on Thursday.

"I thought our execution the whole game was terrible," said Celtics head coach Doc Rivers. "I thought this was an awful game, except for they won. If we had won it, it would've been an awful game that we won. That's how I felt. So, just thought our execution was off."

Bryant, who finished with a game-high 27 points, only scored two points in the fourth quarter, but Los Angeles was still able to force overtime, tying the game up 82-82 at the end of regulation. Ray Allen (22 points) hit a clutch three with 1:08 left in regulation, putting Boston on top 82-80. Pau Gasol (25 points, 14 rebounds) kept L.A. alive after Steve Blake was bailed out on a missed jumper by Bryant, who got his rebound and launched a twisting jumper. Gasol soared to the rim and tipped the ball in to tie it. Mickael Pietrus' desperation three at the buzzer was no good, forcing overtime.

"We set a pick and roll there with me and Ray," said Paul Pierce (18 points) about the final play of regulation. "Ray was the flare and I didn't think he was open. I shouldn't have picked up my dribble. It kind of broke up the play when I picked up my dribble."

Quickly, the Lakers went ahead 86-82 on two jumpers from Bryant and Blake. Pierce, who had seven points at halftime and really dialed up his game in the second half, made a 16-foot jumper and then hit a clutch three with 1:51 left, giving the Celtics an 87-86 edge. Alas, Andrew Bynum delivered the dagger with a tip shot from a foot out at the 1:29 mark.

Several wasted possessions could have doomed the Celtics, and in retrospect they did, but the C's were still able to ge the ball in Pierce's hands on the final play, but he missed a trademarke fadeaway that sealed the victory for the Lakers.

"One of them I didn't make the pass, the second one I just missed the shot," Pierce said of the sequence of events at the end of regulation and overtime.

"The Lakers defense had a lot to do with the play. They clogged the lane especially if we don't fast break. It gets into a half court battle to where they sit in the lane and force you to shoot jumpers. I thought the shots that we got were good shots and they don't break themselves. It's kind of like if we don't break and they don't break it's just like walk down, set something up, and vice versa."

Boston will have to recover quickly, as it head north of the border to face a struggling Toronto Raptors squad at 7:00 p.m. EDT on Friday night at the Air Canada Centre.

Rob Gronkowski continues to let loose now that the Patriots season is over. He was spotted courtside at TD Garden on Thursday, taking in the Boston Celtics game against the Los Angeles Lakers. It has been an eventful week for Gronk. He was caught on grainy camera phone footage dancing to LMFAO hours after losing to the New York Giants. He seemed to be enjoying himself during the game, however, despite whatever criticisms he earned following the Super Bowl loss.

Photo after the jump.

It has been four days since the Patriots fell to the Giants in the 2012 Super Bowl. Football is over in all forms until August, an eight month lay off that is apparently eight months too long for the Boston Celtics. Immediately after the opening tip-off against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday, Kevin Garnett took the ball off the tip-off and long-snapped to Rajon Rondo waiting deep in their own.

Check out the textbook hike after the jump.

The most impressive thing about this is Garnett's impeccable technique, though the Lakers block was admittedly pretty weak. Rondo's self-hike was well-executed as well, and may be the catalyst for a new hybrid center/quarterback position in the NFL. View No. 2 is arguably even better.

Allen scored a game-high 12 points in the opening half to lead Boston, which shot 44 percent from the field. Paul Pierce finished the half with seven points and Kevin Garnett chipped in with eight points and four rebounds. Rajon Rondo had no problem getting to the hoop and totaled six points and four assists in the first half for Boston.
