Randy Monroe and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) are getting tired of having to face the top teams in America East. Tuesday Boston University (11-11, 7-1 America East) took their crack at making a statement against the Retrievers and earned their biggest win of the season (35 points) and most points in a game this season (83), as they decimated UMBC (3-17, 2-6 AE) 83-48.

" [They're] certainly one of the top teams in the league without question," Monroe said. "They have some very good players, good balance, they're definitely one of the top four teams, top three I should say."

And the Retrievers head coach would know, in the past two weeks UMBC had fallen to Stony Brook and Vermont by 40 and 38 points respectively. The Terriers decimated the Retrievers from start to finish in earning sole possession of first place in America East and their seventh-straight victory.

Darryl Partin led the Terriers with a quiet 17 points, while sophomore forward Travis Robinson made a statement with 10 first-half points and six rebounds.

"Some of our keys to the game were to come out and just get better," Robinson said. "We know that UMBC's not one of the better teams in our league but we take it just like we're playing Stony Brook or Vermont. But we take it like it's the next game on our schedule and we just try to come out and jump out on them and make a statement."

Three other Terriers finished with nine points and 11 of the 12 players in Scarlet and White, who saw action, scored in the contest. Sophomore point guard D.J. Irving finished with nine points and a game-high seven assists in a team-high 24 minutes of action. Starting forward Dom Morris and Patrick Hazel combined for 14 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks on 6-of-10 shooting and completely controlled the pain.

The pair helped the Terriers dominate the inside, as Boston University owned a 17-rebound advantage (45-28), 38 points in the paint and 21 second-chance points on 14 offensive rebounds. Another big key for head coach Joe Jones was the team's bench play; the team's second unit scored 33 points, pulled down 21 rebounds and let the starters rest for almost half the game.

"I think some of the guys have played much better as of late, Zach [Chionuma] in particular," Jones said. "Malik [Thomas] did a nice job, Mike Terry played good minutes against Albany and Jeff [Pelage] has been pretty steady in what he brings to the table...I really feel like right now we have one of the stronger benches in the league and I think that will be a strength down the stretch."

Sophomore guard Chase Plummer tied Partin with a game-high 17 points and also recorded a game-high nine points. The only other double-digit scorer for the Retrievers was fellow sophomore Jamar Wertz who finished with 12 points off the bench.

For the game UMBC shot just 30.9 percent (17-of-55) and knocked down 3-of-14 (21 percent) 3-pointers. It was the third time during the Terriers winning streak that they held an opponent to less than 50 points, and would have tied the low water mark for a Boston University opponent this season if not for a late jumper by Jarrel Lane with 39 seconds to go.

On the other side, Boston University connected on 50 percent of their shots in both halves (29-of-58) and hit nine 3-pointers in the win. The team's 83 points surpassed the team's 77 points showing on the road against Maine at the beginning of this streak and were the most points scored by the Terriers since last February, the last time UMBC came to Boston (85 points).

"I was very pleased with our overall effort, I thought we got some very good contributions from a number of guys," Jones said. "I thought in particular Travis Robinson was great in the first half, making a ton of effort plays-he had four offensive rebounds for the game. I thought that really set the tone."

It was relatively close through the first 10 minutes with Boston University holding an 21-15 lead with 8:09 to go in the first half. That's when the Terriers turned it on; Boston University went on the first of their two runs of 10 or more points, to open up a 16-point lead and nearly double the Retrievers (31-15 4:48 to play). UMBC would keep the lead from extending farther than 17 for the rest of the half, but it was just a matter of time before the Terriers broke the game open, as Jones sat his entire starting five for long stretches of each half.

Midway through the second stanza the Terriers blew the game open, when they went on a 20-6 run capped by a breakaway one hand dunk by Terry that brought the crowd to its feet. With 11:42 to go and Boston University leading 56-33, the Terriers received points from seven different players, including three 3-pointers, as the Terriers grabbed their largest lead of the night (37 points).

After that points both teams emptied their benches and it was Mat Piotrowski time. The Terriers redshirt freshmen, who is their first ever seven-footer, earned the first points of his career when he knocked down two free throws with 2:34 to go.

Boston University will be back in action Friday night on ESPNU when they play on the road at Stony Brook in a matchup of the top two teams in the America East standings. Game-time is set for 9 p.m. EDT.

"It's going to be a good environment up there and they're a very, very good team," Partin said.

There was some fear Boston University might overlook the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Tuesday night as they looked forward to a prime-time Friday night matchup at Stony Brook. Within five minutes the Terriers showed they wouldn't overlook the Retrievers for a second year in a row and the rest of the game became a highlight reel for the streaking Terriers.

Behind 17 points from Darryl Partin Boston University (11-11, 7-1) got back to .500 and earned sole possession of first place in the America East Conference behind a 83-48 shellacking of the Retrievers (3-17, 2-6).

Partin and the rest of the Terriers starters all played 24 minutes or less but still managed to make their mark. Sophomore forward Travis Robinson had 10 first half points and added six rebounds and three assists in the win. Point guard D.J. Irving added nine points, a team-high seven assists and forwards Patrick Hazel and Dom Morris combined for 14 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks as Boston University dominated the paint.

Sophomore forward Chase Plummer tied Partin with a game-high 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Classmate Jamar Wertz added 12 points off the bench in the loss, as the Retrievers shot just 30 percent from the field.

Boston University shot an even 50 percent (29-of-58) for the game and knocked down nine 3-pointers. The Terriers controlled the paint with a 17-rebound advantage (45-28) and 38 points in the paint.

There's some games where the game looks like it might get out of hand before the opening tip is even thrown; tonight's game might be one of those. Boston University dominated the paint, the pace and the score in the first half, as they look to earn their seventh straight win and earn sole possession of first place in the America East Conference.

Sophomore forward Travis Robinson led the Terriers with 10 points and five rebounds as the smaller and slower Retrievers couldn't keep him out of the paint. Leading scorer Darryl Partin added nine points for Boston University and fellow senior Matt Griffin chipped in six points off the bench.

Chase Plummer led UMBC with eight points and four rebounds and senior center Jake Wasco added six points on 3-of-4 shooting. Excluding Plummer and Wasco, the Retrievers connected on just two field goals and just 23 percent of their attempts. As a team, UMBC hit 31 percent of their attempts and just 1-of-8 (12 percent) of their 3-pojnt attempts.

Boston University dominated the paint with 24 points in the paint and 24 rebounds. The Terriers hold a 24-11 rebounding advantage and have pulled down eight offensive boards. As a team, the Terriers hit 50 percent (16-of-32) shots for the half.

Boston University will put their six-game winning streak on the line against a UMBC that has lost five of their past six games. A Terriers win can ensure that they'll enter Friday night's showdown at Stony Brook with at least a share of first place.

Event: University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Retrievers (3-16, 2-5 America East) Vs. Boston University Terriers (10-11, 6-1 AE)

Date/Time: Tuesday January 24, 2001-7 p.m. EDT

Location: Case Gym (Capacity: 1,800)-Boston, MA.

Broadcast Info: Doug Brown and Brian Maurer will have a broadcast of the game on 1510 AM WWZN.

Last Year's Games: The Terriers own a 13-7 advantage all-time between the programs dating back to the 1989-90 season. Last season the two programs split the series with Boston University earning an 85-53 victory on Commonwealth Ave behind 47 combined points from John Holland and Darryl Partin. In the win, the Terriers shot 50 percent from the field and held the Retrievers to just 24 first-half points.

Last Time Out: January has been good to Boston University and that trend continued Sunday when they blew out Hartford 65-46 in Connecticut. Partin had his fifth straight strong second half with 22 points in the second stanza to help the Terriers pull away from the upstart Hawks. Boston University held the league's best 3-point shooting team to just 4-of-21 shooting (19 percent), as they earned their sixth straight win.

While the Terriers crushed their opponent Sunday, the Retrievers weren't so lucky at home against Vermont. The Catamounts came away with a 90-62 victory over their America East foes as they shot 56 percent for the game. UMBC's lone bright spot was sophomore forward Chase Plummer who led the team with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Storylines: Boston University will look to stay red-hot in the month of January and avoid overlooking the Retrievers when the two teams square off Tuesday. It's been three years since the Retrievers ended Boston University's season for the second straight year and things have gone downhill fast for Randy Monroe and UMBC. Only one member of that UMBC team is still with UMBC and the program has continually lost some of their best talent to transferring as they've lost 67 of their 79 games over the past three seasons.

On the other side is a Terriers team that has won 13 straight conference games, 20 straight home America East contests and is looking to get back to the America East Championship for the third straight season. In their current six-game winning streak, the team has done everything right. Offensively they are averaging 65.5ppg during the streak behind 42.7 percent shooting behind the arc. On the defensive end they've been even more impressive, holding opponents to 50 points or less three times and an average of 54 points allowed per game.

Partin, the reigning America East Player of the Week, leads the Terriers with 19.9 points and adds 4.2 rebounds per game. The team's catalyst though is sophomore point guard D.J. Irving who leads the conference in assists (5.29apg) and is second in scoring for Boston University with 12.5ppg.

The Retrievers lost their best player and one of the top five playmakers in the league when senior point guard Chris De La Rosa decided to leave the program due to personal reasons after playing one game this year. With De La Rosa out of the picture, Plummer and juniors Brian Neller and Ryan Cook have taken control of the offense. All three members of the trio average double-digits and they've combined to score 60 percent of the team's points this season.

Prediction: Boston University has the edge in every major statistical category except for rebounding and steals and they're facing a Retrievers squad that is 2-9 on the road (with one of those wins coming against 0-20 Towson). The only way this game ends up being close, much less ending up with a UMBC victory, is if the Terriers completely overlook the Retrievers in anticipation of Friday's showdown against Stony Brook for first place. The Stony Brook game could cause a bit of an early hangover, but I expect the Terriers to cruise with the bench earning plenty of playing time.
