Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Mathieu Perreault notched his first career hat trick, pacing Washington in a 5-3 victory over Boston at Verizon Center.

Cody Eakin and Dennis Wideman also scored for the Capitals, who head to the All-Star break having snapped a two game slide.

Tomas Vokoun made 29 saves as Washington played without star forward and captain Alex Ovechkin, who served the first of his three-game suspension on Tuesday.

Tyler Seguin and Brad Marchand tallied for the Bruins, who hit the break with four losses in seven contests.

Tuukka Rask allowed four goals on just 22 shots in defeat.

Perreault reached his milestone with 7:18 gone in the third period. Roman Hamrlik flipped a high shot on net from the point, which Rask blocked away. But the 24-year-old fought off his checker in the slot and slid the rebound home for a 4-3 Washington lead.

Wideman scored an empty-netter from his own defensive zone to ice the game with 27 seconds remaining. Jeff Halpern won the left-circle draw to set up the insurance tally.

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead with 2:14 left in the first period as Rich Peverley's attempted feed for Milan Lucic through the slot was accidentally swept through Vokoun's pads by a diving Karl Alzner.

Eakin equalized for the Caps at 2:14 of the second, when his shot from the left wing caromed off the end boards, back into the crease and off Rask's blocker and crossed the goal line.

Only 41 seconds later, Perreault one-timed an Alexander Semin feed home from between the circles.

Seguin made it 2-2 with 7:39 left when he deked Vokoun and scored in a small space inside the left post, but Perreault broke free and beat Rask just over two minutes later to restore the hosts' one-goal edge.

Marchand then pumped home a rebound on a power play for a 3-3 game with 2:18 to go.

Game Notes

Ovechkin also announced that he will not attend the All-Star festivities in Ottawa this weekend...Perreault matched his career high in goals with the burst, as he totaled seven in 35 games last year...Bruins forward Nathan Horton missed the game due to a mild concussion suffered when Flyers forward Tom Sestito hit him during Sunday's game in Philadelphia...Both clubs resume their respective schedules next Tuesday, as Washington plays at Tampa Bay, and Boston hosts Ottawa.

After a highly defensive oriented first period, the Bruins and Capitals both improved their offensive attack which resulted in five totals goals. The Capitals scoring three, the Bruins scoring two. Here's how it happened.

The B's held their early 1-0 lead in the second period and quickly saw it decimate. With just a little over two minutes past in the period, Capitals forward Cody Eakin beat Tuukka Rask four his fourth goal of the season. Just twenty seconds later, the Caps found the back of the net via a Mathieu Perreault goal. The Caps now found themselves ahead in this one, 2-1.

The B's were able to respond ten minutes with a Tyler Seguin wrister that beat Tomas Vokoun and tied the game at 2-2. The Caps however regained the lead off another goal by Perreault which put them back ahead, 3-2.

Just before the end of the period, Perreault was sent to the penalty box for hooking, which gave the B's a chance to even the score. They did just that, and it came off the stick of Brad Marchand, fresh off his suspension, to make the score 3-3 off a power play goal.

There were four penalties in the second, with Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara and Capitals forward Jason Chimera both being sent to the penalty box for roughing calls. Meanwhile, the Bruins' penalty killing unit successfully killed off a penalty that saw Adam McQuaid go to the box.

Both goalies struggled in the second period as Tuukka Rask only saved 15 of 18 shots from the Capitals while Tomas Vokoun has only saved 23 of 26 shots from the B's

For those of you who thought not having the red hot Nathan Horton in tonight's lineup would stall the productivity of the Bruins' first line, think again.

Against a relatively stingy Washington Capitals defense, the first line was able to find the back of the net, with a little bit of luck though. With 2:14 left to go in the first, Rich Peverley, who is filling in for Horton on the first line, found the back of the net off a deflection from Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner's stick to put the Bruins up 1-0. Patrice Bergeron and Dennis Seidenberg were credited with assists.

Tuukka Rask has been very solid so far the Bruins in place of Tim Thomas. Rask has saved 10 of 10 shots from a Capitals team that is without standing forward Alex Ovechkin, who began serving a five-game suspension on Tuesday. And for the exception of Peverley's goal, Capitals goalie Tomas Vokoun has held the B's offensive lines in check; saving 11 of 12 shots from Boston shooters.

The Penguins came out in the first period, scoring two goals to give Pittsburgh a quick 2-0 lead. Kris Letang and James Neal had the honor of scoring those two goals.

However, Washington came back in the second and did the same thing, tying the game at two a piece before the end of forty minutes with Brooks Laich and Alexander Semin each adding a goal to their season totals.

Alex Ovechkin scored in the third, but so did Neal for his second of the night. Evgeni Malkin finished the night in overtime.

Storyline: This is the first meeting between these two teams, and both will have to go without some key players in the game.

For the Bruins, they will be without at least Andrew Ference for this game, as he will be out for his second game of a three game suspension. They will also be out a top forward, with Nathan Horton not expected to play tonight due to a mild concussion he suffered on Sunday.

However, the Capitals also will have their fair share of absentees. Alex Ovechkin is currently serving a three-game suspension dealt to him on Monday, and forward Nicklas Backstrom continues to be out with a concussion.

Players To Watch:
It will be interesting to see how the entire Bruins team comes out to play tonight.
Boston Bruins forward Nathan Horton will miss Tuesday night's game against the Washington Capitals due to a mild concussion he suffered Sunday against the Philadelphia Flyers, according to ESPN Boston.

The Bruins have a week off after Tuesday's game due to NHL All-Star Game festivities, which should be useful as Horton continues his recuperation. Bruins coach Claude Julien said Horton is doing as well as can be expected and is still considered day-to-day.

"He's doing as good as he can for a guy with a mild concussion," said Bruins coach Claude Julien. "He didn't skate today and he's still suffering from mild headaches. He's day-to-day and hopefully by the end of this five-day break, hopefully we'll have the news we want to hear."

After meeting the Capitals, the Bruins return to the ice next Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators.

Both teams are a bit shorthanded coming into tonight's game, but heading into the All Star Break, who's going to stand out this time?

From the White House to the Verizon Center, the Bruins are hoping that their last game before the All Star Break is a statement game.

They have had a lot going on in the past week, and playing a solid game tonight would allow them to go into the break on a firm and confident foot. Between Andrew Ference's suspension and Tim Thomas' choosing not to go to the White House to be honored by President Obama, the Bruins have had a dim light hanging over their heads the past few days.

But tonight, they will play against the Washington Capitals, also victims of a recent suspension. Super star Alex Ovechkin was suspended for three games on Monday after crushing Zbynek Michalek into the boards. His suspension came the day after the announcement of Ference's three game suspension.

In their seven game stint before the break, the Bruins have gone 3-2-1 so far after posting a remarkable 25-4-1 in their previous 30 before that. For five of those six games, they were without Brad Marchand who also served a suspension after allegedly clipping Sami Salo back on January 7th.
