In 2008 Josh McDaniels was the New England Patriots Offensive Coordinator. He had previously been been with the Patriots since 2001, before being promoted to OC in 2006. Following a few successful seasons in New England McDaniels departed to coach the Denver Broncos. McDaniels was later fired by the Broncos and landed in St. Louis, where he coordinated the Rams' offense during the 2011 NFL season. Following the season McDaniels was let go by the Rams and immediately signed with his former team, the New England Patriots, and will be with the team during their home playoff game against – ironically – the Denver Broncos.

How can a coach join a team mid-playoff run? That's like an NFL free agent signing with a team immediately following the regular season only to join his new team during their playoff run. Unfair advantage, right? Well, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter the NFL will review the rule which allowed McDaniels to sign and join the Patriots mid-playoffs this off-season.

NFL will review rule this off-season that allowed Josh McDaniels to change teams in the same season and to coach in the post-season.

With offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien officially being introduced as the new head coach of Penn State on Saturday, the New England Patriots quickly filled the vacancy by bringing back former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as O'Brien's successor for next season.

On Monday, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick addressed the hire by saying that it's "great to have Josh back on the staff". Belichick also went on to praise McDaniels and gave him a full vote of confidence.

"He's a person I've spent a lot of different time with, in a lot of different situations, and I have a lot of confidence in him," Belichick said on a conference call with reporters. "He's smart, has great experience and background, and he knows our system." (via WEEI)

We learned that McDaniels will not only take over the offense next season, but will also assist Bill O'Brien with it throughout the 2012 playoffs. While we do know that McDaniels will be helping out in some capacity, Belichick wouldn't offer any insight as to where we may see him on Saturday night against the Broncos.

"I think he can help us in a lot of different ways; not sure exactly how all that will pan out." (via WEEI)

The New England Patriots may have found a replacement for their departing Offensive Coordinator Bill O'Brien in former Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, but it seems that McDaniels powers will be limited to just the film room. Or at least that's what we're told to believe.

"... McDaniels will immediately begin working with the New England staff," wrote Shalise Manza-Young of the Boston Globe Sunday. "However, the league source believes that will mostly entail watching film. This season, St. Louis played the Steelers and Ravens, potential postseason opponents for the Patriots."

However, one has to think that McDaniels, who knows the Patriots offense pretty well (or it will not take him very long to catch up), will need to help a little bit more than just film watching, as O'Brien will be doing double duty -- he was officially announced as the next head coach Penn State University for football Saturday.

The Globe is also reporting that one McDaniels does take over next season, he will assume more responsibilty than just OC.

In what would be an egregious case of the rich getting richer, Josh McDaniels' return to the New England Patriots could help the team land one of the league's best wide receivers in Brandon Lloyd.

A free-agent-to-be, Lloyd told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch last month that he would likely follow McDaniels wherever he went. The recipient of 2400 yards in the last two seasons, Lloyd attributes a great deal of his success to McDaniels and his willingness to use him in different receiving roles.

Of course, the Patriots are a unique situation. While most receivers would be thrilled to have Tom Brady throwing to them, the willingness of the Patriots to offer significant money to fill a role where there's not much need and the question of whether there will be enough passes to go around with players like Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski, and Aaron Hernandez on the team could make Lloyd think twice about following McDaniels. Still, to hear Lloyd tell it, all that might not matter:

"Probably No. 1 (as a factor)," Lloyd replied. "Because I want to be successful, and I want to earn whatever money I'm making. I want to be used in ways where I feel comfortable and I can be successful. And Josh knows how to do that."

The New England Patriots are expected to hire Josh McDaniels as an offensive assistant, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter. He should join the team in time to coach during the playoffs.

While McDaniels will act as a coach during this postseason, he will be taking over the role of offensive coordinator for the 2012 season as Bill O'Brien leaves to take over as the head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions.

The Patriots have already requested and been granted permission to speak to McDaniels from the St. Louis Rams, where he is currently under contract as an offensive coordinator. The Boston Globe reported earlier that "all signs point to" McDaniels taking over as New England's next offensive coordinator.

McDaniels previously spent eight seasons coaching for the Patriots, including three as the offensive coordinator before taking the Denver Broncos' head coaching position in 2009. After a strong start, McDaniels' Broncos entered a tailspin, and when things failed to improve in 2010, he was released, becoming the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams.
