Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic has been suspended one game by the NHL after his hit from behind on Zac Rinaldo of the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. Lucic has 11 goals and 13 assists in 31 games player for the Bruins this year.

Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic has been suspended one game by the NHL for his hit on Zac Rinaldo of the Philadelphia Flyers during Saturday's 6-0 win for Boston, according to multiple reports.

TSN's Bob McKenzie was the first to report the news. Lucic had a phone conversation with the NHL's Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan on Monday to discuss the hit, which resulted in Lucic being ejected from them game.

Lucic hit Rinaldo from behind and received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit, which can be seen in this video.

Lucic did not comment about the conversation or possible suspension during Monday morning's skate around, but Rinaldo spoke about the hit and disagreed with the NHL's ruling.

"It's hockey, you hit and go into the boards, I don't think it was dirty at all," Rinaldo said. "Shoulder-to-shoulder and just momentum. He's big guy, maybe double my weight. His momentum carried him into the boards awkwardly. I don't think it was dirty at all." (via CSNPhilly.com)

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Boston exacted its revenge on Saturday, getting goals from six different players in a resounding 6-0 road victory over Philadelphia.

It was the Flyers that spoiled the Bruins’ opening-night raising of their Stanley Cup banner. Boston returned the favor by snapping Philadelphia’s winning streak at seven games behind a four-goal first period and Tim Thomas’ fourth shutout of the season.

“We had a well rounded game today,” said Thomas, who made 31 saves. “We had all types of situations, power plays, penalty kills and even strength. We scored on the power play and we started out the game with a big goal, which helped put the momentum in our favor. Then, every time there was an opportunity for them to get back in the game, with a penalty or something, we came up big on the penalty kill.”

Boston notched its fourth straight win and improved to 18-2-1 since November 1. The defending champs joined Philadelphia atop the Eastern Conference with 43 points.

The Bruins wasted little time, beating Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov twice in the first 2:50 of the contest.

A driving Benoit Pouliot redirected a pass from Rich Peverley 27 seconds after the game’s opening faceoff. Daniel Paille then fired home the rebound of a Dennis Seidenberg point shot.

Boston went up 3-0 on a power-play goal by the returning Zdeno Chara. Nine seconds into the man-advantage, Chara, who missed the previous two games with a lower-body injury and earlier in the frame squared off with Philadelphia pugilist Jody Shelley, lit the lamp on a slap shot through traffic from the left point at 8:08.

The Bruins struck again on a power play, this time with the Flyers down two men, as Milan Lucic staked a claim in front of Bryzgalov and tipped in a Joe Corvo shot at 17:10.

Bryzgalov was pulled after Nathan Horton registered Boston’s third consecutive power-play tally at the 7:06 mark of the second period.

Later in the middle stanza, Lucic received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for a hit from behind on Zac Rinaldo. Philadelphia generated a couple chances during the extended power play that bled into the third period.

Tyler Seguin capped the scoring with 7:48 to play.

“It was a tough day for us, and it was not typical of the way we have been playing or executing,” said Philadelphia head coach Peter Laviolette.

Game Notes

Claude Julien recorded his 200th win as Boston’s head coach…Thomas posted his 30th career shutout…Peverley had three assists and Corvo collected two helpers…Bryzgalov stopped 15 shots, while Sergei Bobrovsky finished with 16 saves in relief…Philadelphia’s Jaromir Jagr played in his 1,300th NHL game…Flyers rookie forward Sean Couturier sustained a head injury late in the first period when he was struck by a shot off the stick of teammate Kimmo Timonen…Philadelphia was 0-for-6 on the power play.

After getting four goals past him in the first period, the Boston Bruins were finally able to chase Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov from the game. The reason being that they were able to get get another goal past Russia born goalie.

Nathan Horton ended Bryzgalov's day when he netted his ninth goal of the season in the seventh minute of the second period off an assists from Zdeno Chara and Rich Peverley. Replacing Bryzgalov was Sergei Bobrovsky, someone the Bruins know all to well from the playoffs last season. However to this point, the Bruins have yet to score off of him.

Through two periods, Bruins goalie Tim Thomas continues to look sharp. To this point, he's saved all 23 shots the Flyers have sent toward him.

The biggest news of the period had to be when Bruins forward Milan Lucic was ejected from the game for a game misconduct after getting in a tussle with the Flyers' Zac Rinaldo after checking him from behind. Lucic's five minute major marks the Bruins' eleventh penalty of the day. But to this point, it's been all B's in this one.

Traveling into a hostile environment like the Wells Fargo Center meant that the Boston Bruins would have to get off to a quick start in order to silence the home Philadelphia Flyer fans. With the first period complete in Philadelphia, it appears that the B's got the message.

The Bruins didn't even need a minute to get on the scoreboard as Benoit Pouliot got the party started with his fifth goal of the season off a Rich Peverley feed within the first thirty seconds of the game. A few minutes later, the Bruins were able to double their lead with a Daniel Pallie shot that beat Flyer goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to give the B's a 2-0 lead.

Bruin power play goals were hard to come by last season, but it appears the team is putting things together this season. The Bruins were able to capitalize on two Flyer penalties and increase the lead to 4-0 after goals by Milan Lucic and Zdeno Chara. Chara, is making his first start since missing two games with an injury.

Tim Thomas has once again been phenomenal for the Bruins in this one. Through one period, he has saved all 17 shots the Flyers have sent his way. Meanwhile, Bryzgalov has saved 15 out of 20 shots from the Bruins.

With the Eastern Conference lead on the line, the Bruins and the Flyers will face off today at 1 p.m., and one of the teams will leave the game without a winning streak anymore.

Once again the top two teams in the Eastern Conference will duke it out--the Big Bad Bruins and the Broad Street Bullies. The B's will have to try and faceoff against a team that hasn't lost in the month of December. The Flyers are on a seven-game winning streak, outscoring their opponents 30-17 despite losing their captain Chris Pronger, who hasn't played a single game in their undefeated streak. The last time he stepped out onto the ice for the Flyers was back on November 19 against Winnipeg.

The Bruins on the other hand have a three-game winning streak including two games in which their all-star defenseman Zdeno Chara was out of the lineup with a lower body injury. In that span, the B's have outscored their opponents 13-5.

Luckily for Boston, Chara should be expected to play in tomorrow afternoon's game, while the Flyers are without Pronger for the rest of the season and Claude Giroux who was diagnosed with a concussion after being hit in the head by teammate Wayne Simmonds' knee.

The puck drops at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN and NHL Network and aired on 98.5 The Sports Hub.
