Brad Marchand and Tyler Seguin notches goals for the Boston Bruins in a wild third period, but it wasn’t enough to overcome their uninspired first two periods as the Carolina Hurricanes won their first game of the season, 3-2.

The game began with a great deal of intensity as tempers flared repeatedly in the opening period. Neither team was able to notch a goal in the first period, despite 23 total shots (13 for Carolina, 10 for Boston).

Just 44 seconds into the second period though, the ’Canes got on the board. Yoni Pitkonen scored on the leftover power play from the end of the first period to put the ’Canes up 1-0.

Carolina would continue to dominate the Bruins in the period, with the B’s unable to get much going thanks to an anemic power play and struggles bringing the puck out of their own zone. Carolina showed little respect for the Bruins defenders, extending their forecheck almost the entire length of the ice for practically the entire game and causing a number of turnovers.

Tim Thomas did an admirable job keeping the B’s in the game during the second period, he was credited with five saves but also was forced to dive on the puck to slow the on-rush of the Hurricanes.

In the third period at 3:42, Anthony Stewart beat Tim Thomas with a wrist shot from in close to open up a two goal lead.

The goal awakened the Bruins offense though, as Tyler Seguin would answer just 25 seconds later with a wrister from the right side of Cam Ward to cut lead in half at 2-1. The goal was the first of the season for Seguin and was assisted by Nathan Horton and Adam McQuaid.

The game was back and forth for the next 10 minutes with both sides getting quality looks and both goalies making spectacular saves to keep it a 2-1 game. Finally though, Jiri Tlusty scored what would be the game winner for the Hurricanes with a long range blast from Brandon Sutter and Patrick Dwyer at 13:32.

The Bruins would score once more three minutes later on a delayed penalty call when Patrice Bergeron made a whirling cross ice pass on to the stick of Brad Marchand, who one-timed it past Cam Ward to make it 3-2.

A frantic final five minutes produced a number of chances for the Bruins but not the equalizer and the Hurricanes escaped with a 3-2 win.

The Bruins were 0-5 on the power play tonight, continuing their early season struggles with the man advantage. They’re just 1-18 on the season.

On the carryover power play from the first period, Yoni Pitkonen has the only goal of the game after two periods and it belongs to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The ’Canes forward scored the goal just 44 seconds into the second period (seven seconds remaining on the PP) by beating Tim Thomas from the side of the net while Eric Staal was shielding Thomas. Former Bruin Tomas Kaberle and Jussi Jokinen were credited with assists on the play.

The goal highlighted a bad second period for the Bruins who struggled against the Carolina forecheck throughout the period, turning over the puck in their own end repeatedly or being unable to maintain it in the offensive zone. The B’s also went 0-3 on the power play in the period, bringing their nightmarish start to 0-5 in the game and 1-18 on the season.

The only positive has been Tim Thomas who, despite allowing the soft goal early in the period, stood on his head repeatedly to keep it a one goal game.

Offensively the only quality chance the Bruins had in the period was on a shot from Rich Peverley that hit a Hurricanes player and skidded through the crease.

The Carolina Hurricanes out-shot the Boston Bruins 13-10 but neither team was able to push the puck into the net after the first 20 minutes at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Looking to refocus on hockey after struggling in their first three games, the Bruins have been very physical with the Hurricanes thanks to big hits from Brad Marchand and Milan Lucic. The ‘Canes haven’t backed away though and have given as good as they’ve gotten.

The Bruins best chance came early in the period when a wild scramble in front of the net resulted in open net opportunities for both Lucic and Tyler Seguin, but neither was able to get any wood on the puck to put it in the net.

Carolina goalie Cam Ward has been sharp otherwise, shutting down almost all the Bruins attacks and not allowing many rebounds. Tim Thomas has been equally sharp, making several crucial saves including a great stop of Jeff Skinner late in the period with the Hurricanes on the power play.

The Bruins are 0-2 on the power play tonight, making them 1-15 on the season.

When the second period begins the Hurricanes will be on the power play for another 30 seconds.

Broadcast Info: Wednesday's game between the Bruins and Hurricanes will be broadcast live on VERSUS. The game can also be heard on the 98.5 the Sports Hub Radio Network, with Dave Goucher providing play-by-play, and Bob Beers providing analysis.

Last Time Out: The Bruins fell to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday 1-0, and have dropped two of the three games they have played so far this season. The Hurricanes on the other hand have not won a game this season and are looking to rebound at home against the Stanley Cup Champions.

Storyline: These two teams essentially traded defensemen during the offseason. The Bruins acquired Joe Corvo from Carolina, while they sent Tomas Kaberle packing his bags to go down south. Kaberle has not registered a single point so far this year, while Corvo boasts an assist in the first goal of the season from Brad Marchand.

Last season, the Hurricanes took the first win of the series, but dropped the last couple to the Bruins. Captain Zdeno Chara scored a hat trick in their second meeting (the first of his career).

Looking ahead to tonight's game, the Bruins will have to go without first line center David Krejciwho is out with an undisclosed injury. Head coach Claude Julien ruled him out for tonight, and the likely replacement will be 19-year-old Tyler Seguin.

Players To Watch: Well, with Krejci out, someone to definitely keep an eye on is Seguin. He has been impressive so far this season and could potentially create a spark in a first line that has been lacking any sort of production. His speed will complement the two wingers Lucic and Horton, and maybe some new blood will ignite the skates and excitement from them.

Bruins forward Rich Peverley is also a much watch. Just recently signed to a 3-year contract extension, it will be interesting to see how he comes out this first game back knowing he is locked down for another couple of years with the club.

Also, the entire Carolina team is hungry for a win, and what better way to get the first then to go after the champions? While every team seems to have this mentality going in, don't be surprised if players like Cam Ward, Kaberle or Jussi Jokinen step it up. The Hurricanes haven't lost by much in any game, and they are just on the brink of taking a win.

Prediction: The Bruins have always been a better road team, especially in the past couple of years. They are without their best center, but they are also frustrated after Monday, and don't expect them to come out like that again two games in a row. Final Score: Bruins 3, Hurricanes 2.
