The Red Sox downed the Yankees 3-2 Sunday night on Josh Reddick's walk-off hit in the tenth, clinching the season series against the Yankees in the process.

It was a typical 2011 Josh Beckett start for the first six innings. Beckett pitched exceptionally well, allowing just one run on a home run to Eduardo Nunez that's likely an out in most parks. But despite throwing six effective innings, Beckett left with a no-decision thanks to a number of missed chances by the Boston offense. A bases loaded, zero outs situation led to all of one run for the Sox when only Marco Scutaro could pull off a clutch hit in the bottom of the second, but even that was better than what happened in the sixth.

With Boone Logan in to begin the sixth, the Red Sox got off to a hot start as David Ortiz walked and Carl Crawford singled to put men at first and second with zero outs. Josh Reddick showed bunt on the first pitch, but after it missed for a ball, decided to swing the bat, leading to an easy fly out. Still, things seemed to be turning out fine for the Sox when Logan threw three straight balls to Jason Varitek until, inexplicably, the Captain took a hack at the fourth pitch and lifted a weak pop-up into foul territory. Marco Scutaro singled again to load the bases, but Jacoby Ellsbury popped out to end the threat.

One inning later, and Matt Albers saw Brett Gardner dig out a low slider and put the Sox in a 2-1 hole with a long homer. It seemed that the earlier might cost them the game.

But, with the greatest closer in the history of the game on the mound to start the ninth, the Red Sox fought back thanks to, again, Marco Scutaro, who cleaned out an inside pitch and knocked it off the wall for a leadoff double. A small-ball approach worked, and two sacrifices later, the tying run was in.

Despite a short ninth, the Yankees elected to go to Phil Hughes in the tenth after Daniel Bard cleaned up the Yankees in the top of the frame. He picked up the first out on a Kevin Youkilis fly ball to center, but David Ortiz laced a line drive into right field and up into the stands for a ground rule double. With Carl Crawford already having three hits in the game (and 9-for-his-last-10) and one out, Joe Girardi called for the intentional walk to set up the double play. But Josh Reddick wasn't about to give them the chance. The first pitch he threw to the young right fielder was a curveball that hung over the outside part of the plate. Reddick took what was offered, hitting a line drive to the opposite field, letting a pinch-running Darnell McDonald cross home plate with ease to give the Sox the winning run.

Homers from Brett Gardner and Eduardo Nunez combined with another big wasted opportunity for Boston has left the Red Sox trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh.

While Nunez' Monster shot tied the game, the Sox can thank Josh Reddick that it didn't end up giving the Yankees the lead. With one out, Russell Martin knocked a base hit into right. With the ball rattling up against the side wall, Martin broke for second as Josh Reddick ran to get it back in. The young right fielder made a quick, strong, and accurate throw, catching Martin by a good foot to leave the bases empty. Two pitches later, and Martin's absence was felt all the more as Eduardo Nunez got just enough of a Josh Beckett cutter to clear the Monster in left, leaving the game tied.

The Sox had a golden opportunity to take a lead and even blow things open in the bottom of the Sixth as David Ortiz and Carl Crawford reached to start the inning. Josh Reddick made the first out on a fly ball, but with Boone Logan running up a 3-0 count on Jason Varitek, things seemed to be turning in Boston's favor.

But then Varitek swung 3-0, and with his bat speed being what it is, the result was a lazy pop-up in foul ground. Marco Scutaro managed to reach on an infield single, but for the second time tonight, Jacoby Ellsbury was unable to provide the big hit, popping out to left to end the threat.

Shortly thereafter, the Yankees made it all-too-clear how costly the missed opportunity was. Matt Albers made a solid pitch to Brett Gardner, but the Yankees' left fielder somehow managed to put a good swing on it, digging out a low slider and sending it well past the bullpens in right for a 2-1 Yankees lead.

The Red Sox have a 1-0 lead after three innings against the New York Yankees, but could have had more if they didn't let Freddy Garcia off the hook in the second.

Both Beckett and Garcia were strong in the first, with only one baserunner allowed between them on a walk to Curtis Granderson with a number of close pitches. In the second, though, Beckett sat down the side in order, and Garcia most certainly did not. Kevin Youkilis drew a leadoff walk, and then advanced to second when David Ortiz beat the shift, singling past Mark Teixeira and into right field. Carl Crawford took advantage of his speed to reach first on a high chopper, and all-of-a-sudden the Sox had the bases loaded and zero outs.

Unfortunately, they could do little with it. Josh Reddick battled off three pitches with a count of 1-2, but ended up striking out on the fourth. Jason Varitek managed to put the ball in play, but Derek Jeter managed to take charge as three Yankee fielders nearly collided in short left, and there was no chance for Youkilis to make it home.

Up came Marco Scutaro. Garcia delivered three straight balls to the Boston shortstop, but managed to find the zone with Scutaro taking all the way on the fourth pitch. With the green light on the 3-1 count, Garcia delivered another strike, and Scutaro found the hole between first and second for a base hit that scored Youkilis from third.

Still, with Jacoby Ellsbury's flair falling harmlessly into Brett Gardner's glove, the Sox left a good few runs unscored, and with six innings to go, hold only a one run lead against Freddy Garcia. They had to be hoping for more, even with Beckett on the mound.

The Red Sox will have Josh Beckett on the mound Sunday night as they look for a win against the New York Yankees that would be of special significance.

Not only would a win Sunday mean a series win for the Sox--the fourth straight to start the year--but it would also give the Sox a 10-2 record against the Yankees, securing the season series for Boston for the first time since 2004. It would also effectively give the Red Sox a 1.5 game lead in the division, since head-to-head record determines the division winner in cases where the second place team would win the wild card, as is likely to be the case in the A.L. East this year.

It seems only too appropriate, then, that it's rotation anchor Josh Beckett on the mound looking to seal the win for the Red Sox. And, of course, with Beckett comes Varitek. He'll join a lineup that--while already featuring three MVP candidates batting 1-2-3--is looking all-the-more-formidable after Carl Crawford's 4-for-4 performance Saturday.

Pitching Matchup: Josh Beckett (9-4, 2.20 ERA) vs. Freddy Garcia (10-7, 3.22 ERA)

It was nearly four months ago that Josh Beckett announced his return to form against the New York Yankees, outlasting CC Sabathia's one good start against the Sox by putting up eight innings of shutout ball against the best lineup outside of Boston. He's not quite reached those heights against New York since, but he's certainly not had any trouble against them, twice more outmatching CC Sabathia, and allowing just two earned runs in thirteen additional innings of work. Beckett has been a bit vulnerable to the home run of late, which isn't the best sign against a team like the Yankees, but given his ability to keep men off the basepaths otherwise, they hopefully won't be doing too much damage.

Freddy Garcia can't be looking forward to facing Boston again. In Garcia's three appearances against Boston this year--two of them starts--the veteran junk-baller has allowed ten runs (nine earned) in eight innings against the Sox, not even lasting into the third in his last outing. Against everyone else he's been impressive, but Boston has consistently managed to tee off on both his fastball and changeup. He's done rather better with the slider, but without the first two pitches available, it's hard to establish anything else. It could be another tough night out there for Garcia if he can't find a way to make his 87-MPH "heater" play.

We're approaching mid-August, and the Boston Red Sox (69-43) and New York Yankees (69-43) are tied atop the American League East. Is anyone really surprised? And further more, is there a better way to have it? It'd be no fun if one team had a 10-game lead over the other. When it comes down to it, a battle for first in the AL East is always fun. Here are the complete AL East standings, as well as the rest of the MLB standings as of Sunday morning.

The Red Sox scored seven runs off of CC Sabathia Saturday, returning to a tie atop the A.L. East with a 10-4 beating of the Yankees.

After a pair of perfect innings, CC Sabathia finally showed some vulnerability in the third. Carl Crawford led off the inning with the first of what would be four hits for the left fielder on the day: a double off the wall in left. Jarrod Saltalamacchia drew a walk, and with Sabathia having looked incredible in the first two innings, the Sox decided to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Jacoby Ellsbury brought home the first run of the game with a sacrfice fly, and Dustin Pedroia made it 2-0 by bouncing another double off the Monster.

The Yankees wasted no time tying things up, scoring two off of Lackey after loading the bases with no outs in the fourth, but the Sox didn't let the tie last long at all. Kevin Youkilis led off the bottom of the frame with a double, then moved to third on a flair off the bat of Mike Aviles that fell in front of Nick Swisher in right. Carl Crawford's grounder found a hole between second and third, and it was 3-2.

The Sox were far from done, however. After Jarrod Saltalamacchia struck out, Marco Scutaro shot a line drive up the middle for a fourth run, and with two men on, Jacoby Ellsbury took a 2-0 fastball and hit a towering fly ball that ended up just barely in the stands in right for a three-run shot to make it 7-2.

The Yankees picked up a run in the fifth after the first three men reached base, but Lackey fought back to strike out the next two batters, and ended up escaping both the fifth and sixth innings without any more damage. He finished his day with a strong start against a strong team in the books. Daniel Bard would allow a home run to Mark Teixeira, who has routinely killed him during his career, but closed out the rest of the eighth quietly enough.

While the Sox didn't need to add any more runs, they did in the eighth after Josh Reddick, Carl Crawford, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia reached base to lead off the inning. Jacoby Ellsbury picked up his fifth and sixth RBI of the game, and Dustin Pedroia hit a sacrifice fly to make it 10 runs on the day for the Sox. Dan Wheeler finished things off in the ninth, and the Sox rejoined the Yankees in a tie atop the A.L. East.

The Red Sox have built their lead to 7-3 entering the seventh after a big fourth-inning burst capped off by Jacoby Ellsbury’s three-run shot.

John Lackey didn’t waste any time giving the two runs the Sox had earned in the third back. The third inning started with a single, a walk, and a hit batter, loading the bases with zero outs. A double play ball helped keep things in control, but Eric Chavez’ single over Carl Crawford’s head gave the Yankees the tying run before Lackey could close out the inning.

Just when it seemed like a repeat of Friday’s defeat, though, the Sox offense kicked it into high gear. Kevin Youkilis led off the bottom of the inning with a double, and after David Ortiz struck out, Mike Aviles dropped a lazy flair in front of Nick Swisher in right. Youkilis could not score, having been caught up waiting for the pitch to drop, but had no problem reaching home as Carl Crawford picked up his second hit of the day, shooting a well-hit ground ball into left field.

With two outs, Marco Scutaro continued his unusual record of hitting against C.C. Sabathia, lining a ball up the middle to drive in a fourth Boston run and keeping the inning going to give Jacoby Ellsbury a chance. With two men on, the center fielder gave his MVP candidacy another extra boost, turning a 2-0 fastball into a towering fly that just barely made its way into the stands in right, putting the Sox up 7-3.

John Lackey surrendered another run in the fifth, but bore down and ended up striking out the next two batters before getting a groundout to end the threat. He would come back out for the sixth and pitch around a leadoff single to finish his day with a quality start.
