The carousel that is the Boston College starting quarterback job continues to turn.

Chase Rettig, the true freshman who earned the start Saturday night against Notre Dame, was injured in the Eagles' loss to the Irish, leaving late in the second quarter with an ankle injury. He was just 5-of-10 for for 72 yards before he was hurt. This left the game in the hands of back-up Mike Marscovetra, and while he attempted 37 passes, he managed only 193 yards (and threw two interceptions).

X-rays on the ankle were negative, and it reportedly is "just" an ankle sprain, according to Eagle Action's Eric Hoffses. While Rettig is apparently telling people that he "will play on Saturday," nothing is certain at this point.

If Rettig is unable to play Saturday against N.C. State, then B.C. is left to choose between Marscovetra, or turn back to benched former starter, Dave Shinskie. Coach Frank Spaziani realizes his team is not in the best situation currently.

"It's sort of like back to Square One, isn't it? We'll handle it with Mikey and Dave and keep our other options open."

Unfortunately, for Spaziani and the Eagles, they don't really have many options, writes the Herald's Steve Conroy.

He could try another true freshman, Josh Bordner, but removing another redshirt seems unlikely at this point. He could hope for a minor miracle to give the Eagles back Rettig, who did not practice yesterday, by next Saturday. That certainly didn't seem likely when Rettig hobbled out of the Yawkey Building press conference room with a boot on his left foot late Saturday.

Right now, it looks like the Wolfpack will see Shinskie or Marscovetra or a combination of both.

Whoever the starter is, they'll have their work cut out for them: N.C. State boasts the league's third-best pass defense, and the second-highest sack total (18 in five games).

According to the Boston Globe's Mark Blaudschun, Boston College will start true freshman Chase Rettig Saturday night against Notre Dame, with sophomore Mike Marscovetra and former starter Dave Shinskie battling for the back-up role. The team is expected to make the announcement official on Wednesday.

According to the team source, "Chase took about 80 percent of the snaps (with the first team) in practice [on Tuesday].''

Rettig is the second true freshman to start for the Eagles in the last two years ... The 6-foot-4 inch 205 pound Rettig enrolled at BC last January after passing up overtures from Tennessee, UCLA, USC, Arizona and Arizona State. Rettig, who lives in San Clemente, Calif. was regarded as the BC QB of the future when he came East last winter. Spaziani and offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill had hoped to bring him along at a slow and steady pace, which meant redshirting this season and then competing for the job next spring and summer.

The Eagles host the Irish Saturday night at 8 P.M. ET.

Boston College will have a new starting quarterback next time you seen them.

After Saturday's performance -- 11-for-25 with two interceptions before being replaced by Mike Marscovetra -- Dave Shinskie has been demoted and will not be starting against Notre Dame on Saturday. Head coach Frank Spaziani announced this week of practices will be a competition between Marscovetra, a a sophomore, and true freshman Chase Rettig.

"We are going to make a change at quarterback,'' said Spaziani, indicating that back-up Mike Marscovetra and freshman Chase Rettig wil move up in the depth chart for the starting job this week for the job which had belonged to sophomore Dave Shinskie. "Mike and Chase will compete for the job this week.''

Spaziani added that the decision may not be made until gametime.
