Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - David Ortiz's three-run homer capped a two-out rally in the eighth inning that lifted the Boston Red Sox to a 9-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners in the second of three games at Safeco Field.

Ortiz finished with two hits for the Red Sox, who have won five of their last eight games. Adrian Beltre went 3-for-4 with a double, setting the team record for most extra-base hits by a third baseman (71) while also setting a new career-high in doubles (42).

Jed Lowrie added his first career multi-homer game, blasting his ninth and 10th career long balls, while Rich Hill (1-0) earned his first win since June 19, 2009 while with Baltimore for getting the final out of the seventh.

Franklin Gutierrez finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI for the Mariners, who scored more than three runs at home for the first time since August 6. For the last 16 games in its home park, Seattle had tallied three or fewer runs, the longest single-season streak in the majors since 1920.

Russell Branyan also drove in a pair of runs, while Chone Figgins had four hits. Ichiro Suzuki went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI to raise his season hit total to a major-league best 189.

With the game tied, 4-4, entering the seventh, the Mariners forged ahead. Suzuki singled to open the inning, and Figgins put down a sacrifice bunt. Branyan struck out, but Michael Bowden allowed a go-ahead RBI double to Gutierrez to put Seattle in front.

Boston, though, rallied with two outs in the eighth. Brandon League (9-7) retired the first two hitters, but Victor Martinez and Beltre both singled to keep the inning alive. Ortiz followed with a mammoth blast to center, putting Boston ahead, 7-5.

The Red Sox added two insurance runs in the ninth when pinch-runner Eric Patterson scored on a squeeze bunt by Ryan Kalish, who stole second and scored on Josh Reddick's base hit.

Figgins' RBI single off Jonathan Papelbon in the home half accounted for the final margin.

Seattle jumped on top in the first inning. Figgins singled with one away and stole second. After Branyan walked, Gutierrez sent an RBI single to right.

Lowrie, though, provided a quick answer for Boston, blasting a two-run homer in the second. Beltre led off with a double and attempted to score on Ortiz's single, but was thrown out at home.

The Red Sox added to their lead in the third on Martinez's RBI single, but the Mariners got back to within one when Suzuki walked, stole second, moved to third on a single and scored on Branyan's groundout in the home half.

Lowrie displayed some more power in the fourth, leading off the inning with his second home run of the game for a 4-2 Red Sox lead, but Suzuki's RBI double and Branyan's sacrifice fly in the fifth tied the game at 4-4.

Game Notes

Suzuki is gunning for his 10th straight 200-hit season and has led the league in hits in each of the past four seasons...Beltre broke Wade Boggs' extra-base hit record after the Hall of Famer set the mark in 1987...Boston leads the season series, 6-3...Seattle has lost six straight overall...Luke French allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings for Seattle, while Daisuke Matsuzaka gave up five runs, eight hits and four walks in six-plus innings for Boston...Ortiz's homer was his 30th, giving him his sixth 30-home run season and first since 2007.

(Sports Network) - Daisuke Matsuzaka tries to rebound from an awful effort his last time out when the Boston Red Sox continue their three-game series with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

Matsuzaka was hammered by the Tampa Bay Rays last Tuesday for eight runs and eight hits in just 4 2/3 innings, dropping him to 9-5 on the season, while raising his earned run average to 4.70.

"Lack of command caught up with him and kind of caught up in a hurry," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said of his starting pitcher.

Matsuzaka has faced the Mariners seven times and is 2-1 against them with a 3.65 ERA.

Boston can only hope its Japanese hurler gives the type of effort Jon Lester provided it with in the opener on Monday. Lester pitched eight impressive innings, leading the Red Sox to a 5-1 win.

Lester (17-8) allowed just one run on three hits and three walks, striking out 12 for the Red Sox, who won for the fourth time in seven games. The lefty, who is 6-1 over his last seven starts, also struck out 10 or more for the fourth straight outing, a career-best.

"I was able to locate a fastball and get ahead," Lester said. "That's big for any pitcher, getting ahead and being able to do what you want to with it. You get a couple runs on the board and you can sit back a little bit and minimize damage. It makes things easier, takes pressure off you so you can go out there and pitch."

Ryan Kalish added a two-run homer, while Lars Anderson hit his first career double and knocked in a run.

Chone Figgins had two hits, and Casey Kotchman drove in the lone run for Seattle, which has lost five straight. Doug Fister (5-12) was victimized for five runs, six hits and a walk in 7 1/3 frames to take the loss.

"I thought Fister was good tonight," said Mariners manager Daren Brown. "You take away the second inning, after that, he only gave up one hit going into the eighth. I thought he pitched well, just a couple of mistakes the one inning. Other than that I thought he was solid."

Heading to the hill for the Mariners this evening will be left-hander Luke French, who is 4-5 on the year with a 3.90 ERA. French absorbed the loss on Wednesday in Oakland, as he allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

This will be his first-ever appearance against the Red Sox.

Boston is 5-3 against Seattle this season.
