The Red Sox handed the ball, and the game, over to Jonathan Papelbon with a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth. Just six batters later, the game was tied, the bases were loaded, and there was still only one out recorded. Tito Francona made the move to go to Daniel Bard, but in a nearly impossible situation, he gave-up the game-winning sacrifice fly. Afterward, Papelbon spoke on his sixth blown save of 2010:

"You want to finish games, that's my job. I want to finish games. But I think the fact of the matter is that I didn't execute my job and you pass it on to somebody else."

"I didn't have much power or energy in my delivery today," he explained. When asked if he felt like that warming up in the bullpen, Papelbon responded, "Just most of the day. Just kind of a groggy day for me."

The Red Sox were in great position to earn their fourth straight game -- and the 12th win in their past 17 games -- Tuesday against the Blue Jays. Boston led 5-2 heading in the bottom of the ninth, and had Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon ready to enter the game when starter John Lackey finally ran out of gas.

That happened quickly, when Lackey surrendered a lead-off home run to Jose Bautista, cutting the Sox lead down to 5-3. But no worries, right? Bard, who was already warming up in the eighth, will come and 1-2-3, Boston wins. Oh ... here comes Papelbon. Well, OK, it is a safe situation, after all. Let's have Over The Monster tell us how it went:

On his first pitch, Papelbon allowed a double. On his second, a single, bringing the Jays within one. On his seventh pitch, the tying run went to third with nobody out on another single--this time off his own foot--and on the ninth pitch, Edwin Encarnacion tied the game with a double.

Daniel Bard, who probably should have been the one trying to lock down the save in the first place, came in to try and work a miracle with the bases loaded, one out, and the tying run at third. But when you can't even allow a flyout, that's a tall order. Fred Lewis pushed a 1-0 fastball to center field, and Ellsbury's throw was not in time, giving the Jays a crushing walkoff win.

WEEI's Alex Speier points out that today was the first time Papelbon the reliever has ever been pulled from the game in the middle of an inning with the game tied.

It was Papelbon's sixth blown save in 2010 (in 35 chances), which matches his career high of 2006 (in 41 chances).

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Fred Lewis' sacrifice fly capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth as Toronto shocked Boston, 6-5, to avoid a three-game sweep at Rogers Centre.

Red Sox starter John Lackey cruised into the ninth inning with a 5-2 lead but was greeted by Jose Bautista's league-leading 36th home run of the season. The hit brought out closer Jonathan Papelbon (4-5), who immediately yielded a double to Vernon Wells. Wells was crossing home just as quickly on Adam Lind's base hit back through the middle.

DeWayne Wise came on as a pinch-runner for Lind and swiped second before Aaron Hill drilled a pitch back toward the mound. It deflected and was caught up amongst the legs of Papelbon, who couldn't locate in time as Wise moved to third and Hill took first.

Travis Snider went down swinging, but Edwin Encarnacion ripped a double into the left-field corner to score Wise with the tying run and Hill advanced to third with one out. Lyle Overbay was intentionally walked to load the bases and create a force at any base and Papelbon was pulled in favor of Daniel Bard.
(Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox try to continue their recent mastery of the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon when they go for a sweep in their three- game series at Rogers Centre,

Boston won for the ninth time in 11 chances against its American League East foes on Wednesday. Bill Hall hit a pair of homers and drove in four runs, as Boston used the long ball to support Clay Buchholz in a 10-1 pounding of Toronto up north.

Hall finished 3-for-5, Adrian Beltre hit a three-run home run and Mike Lowell contributed three hits, an RBI and run scored. Buchholz (13-5) had superb movement on his pitches Wednesday, surrendering one unearned run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks over eight frames for the Red Sox, winners of three in a row.

"It's a fun game to be a part of because as the game rolls on you always have something going on," Buchholz said. "It wasn't a boring game by any means. Fortunately I was able to throw eight innings and keep the team in the game for a win."

Shaun Marcum (10-6) was hit hard for eight runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks over four-plus frames. He gave up four home runs as well in the losing effort. Adam Lind finished with three hits for the Blue Jays, who have dropped two straight.

"Marcum certainly didn't have his good stuff tonight," Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said. "They kind of beat up on us."

Despite the two losses to start this series, Toronto has still won 11 of its last 14 games against the AL East.

Getting the call for the Red Sox this afternoon will be right-hander John Lackey, who has lost his last two starts and four of his past five decisions. He fell to 10-7 on Saturday in New York, as the Yankees reached him for five runs and eight hits in six innings.

Lackey has allowed 11 runs in his last two starts and has seen his earned run average rise to 4.60.

He was hit hard for seven runs in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to Toronto back on July 10 and is 4-4 lifetime against them with a 4.29 ERA in 13 starts.

Toronto will counter with young lefty Brad Mills, who will be making his third start of the season. After winning his season debut, Mills did not get a decision on Saturday against Tampa Bay, which hit him for five runs and five hits in four innings of a wild 17-11 Blue Jays' win.
