Per a Scott Lauber tweet, Jason Varitek has been activated from the disabled list, and will rejoin the Red Sox for the first time since June tonight as the team starts its series against the Rays.

Varitek, who last played in the June 30 game against Tampa, has been out for the last two months with a broken foot. Needing only two rehab games to get ready to play with the Sox again, Varitek collected two hits in five at bats. He was batting .263/.324/.547 while performing the backup catching duties for the Red Sox before hitting the DL.

Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek broke his foot Wednesday night. Early reports had Varitek expected to miss four to six weeks. However, Peter Abraham and Nick Cafardo in the Boston Globe report that the Sox catcher will be out for six weeks.

Now, the Red Sox will have two catchers on the disabled list. Kevin Cash will be the Red Sox main catcher for the immediate future.

It's bad enough that Victor Martinez just hit the disabled list, but now his backup Jason Varitek is joining him as well:

A major league source tells WBZ-TV's Dan Roche Thursday night that Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek could miss 4-6 weeks due to a leg injury. It's believed that it may be a broken foot.

Fortunately, the Red Sox acquired Kevin Cash earlier in the day to play some catcher. This means that Cash will most likely be the team's starting catcher while Gustavo Molina will be the team's backup.

Varitek was hitting .263 with seven home runs before hitting the disabled list.

How did this all happen? The Red Sox are still wondering the answer to that question.
