Dustin Pedroia has had a screw inserted in his foot as part of a season-ending surgery that was deemed “successful,” per an Ian Browne tweet.

The team was set to make a decision on Dustin Pedroia’s foot after a CT scan Thursday. Given that Pedroia went under the knife, it seems like the results weren’t positive.

With the surgery complete, Pedroia should be on a normal schedule for next year.

While nothing has been determined yet, and won't until after Friday's CT scan, Dustin Pedroia sounds like he's headed for surgery: "I think that putting a screw in (tomorrow) is probably the best idea."

Both Boston Herald scribe Sean McAdam and NESN baseball reporter Heidi Watney have countered the morning report that Boston Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia will undergo foot surgery Friday.

Watney proclaimed that surgery isn't imminent, though a morning CT scan is, while McAdam acknowledges the possibility of a procedure occurring soon after such a scan. Either way, a decision about Pedroia's next steps in regards to his broken left foot looks to be made sometime on Friday.

Pedroia hasn't played for the Sox since being placed back on the disabled list on Aug. 20, after missing most of the summer with the fracture, which occurred June 25.

According to a report by Nick Cafardo in the Boston Globe, Dustin Pedroia is expected to have surgery on his foot on Friday, which would force him to miss the rest of the 2010 season (rehab is approximately three months).

This news isn't terribly surprising -- Pedroia was expected to "shut it down" a week ago. He is currently on the disabled for the second time this season after suffering a "non-displaced fracture of the medial navicular bone" when he fouled a pitch off his left foot against the Giants June 25.

Friday's surgery, to be performed at Massachusetts General Hospital, would insert a screw into his foot. Pedroia met with foot specialist Dr. George Theodore Thursday night in Baltimore.

While the Red Sox are already not expecting Dustin Pedroia back until 2011, the question of surgery remains for the second baseman. And now, with Pedroia talking to reporters about his status, Scott Lauber says it doesn’t sound good.

When the team gets home next Friday, [Pedroia] will undergo a bone scan that will determine whether he needs to have a pin inserted into his still-healing navicular bone.

Pedroia sounds resigned to having surgery.

"If it shows healing, I won’t have the surgery," Pedroia said, "but it hasn’t shown it’s healing the whole time."

While surgery is never the option the team or player hopes for, it’s probably better to get it over with now than to go into 2011 with the possibility looming over Pedroia’s head.

Did you see Dustin Pedroia being out for the season? No? Well you should have:

Does this really surprise anyone, though? Pedroia is arguably the team's best player and the Red Sox are fighting for third place right now. They weren't going to throw Pedroia out there in September to try and rack in a few more wins in a season that has been an uphill climb since the getgo. It just isn't worth risking more injury to one of the best second basemen in baseball.

So, sure, this is "news" but it's news like, "Yuniesky Betancourt had a bad season" news -- you saw it coming from a mile away.

At this point in the season, the Red Sox need to just let Pedroia get healthy for 2011 and see if Bill Hall/Jed Lowrie/Yamaico Navarro/Scrub No. 4 can pick up the slack in the meantime.

If Pedroia's season is over, his final line of the year looks like so:

Dustin Pedroia is reportedly expected to "shut it down for the remainder of the season," according to Nick Cafardo at the Boston Globe.

Pedroia, who returned to the disabled list on Friday, just days after rejoining the team following the original two-month stint on the DL for a broken bone in his foot, will wear a stabilizing boot on the injured leg for 7-10 days. After that, the team will reevaluate him. From there, it will either be a "non operative course," or surgery. If the team does determine surgery is needed, it would involve inserting a screw into Pedroia's foot, and would be season-ending.

Though nothing has been decided yet, Pedroia is facing the possibility of surgery optimistically: "I will be good as new," Pedroia said in a text message to WEEI.com.

The Red Sox have called up Triple-A infielder Yamaico Navarro to replace Dustin Pedroia. He should make it to the park on time for the beginning of the game, traffic permitting.

A sleeper in the Red Sox’ system this year, Navarro has made significant steps offensively, improving his plate discipline and power, barely missing a step in his recent promotion to Triple-A Pawtucket. In his last 10 games with the Paw Sox, Navarro is batting .294/.342/.559 with three walks, three strikeouts, and a pair of homers.

A flashy defender, Navarro has played up the middle and at the hot corner during his minor league career, and has more than enough ability to manage those positions at the major league level.
