With Friday night's deadline looming, the Boston Red Sox have chosen to non-tender Scott Atchison, the right-handed reliever told Rob Bradford of WEEI.com, making Atchison an available reliever on the free agent market for the second straight season.
After being non-tendered last offseason, it sounds as if Atchison knows a reunion may not be in the works this time, telling WEEI.com, "I would like to stay in Boston," he said by phone, "but now we're going to have to see what's out there."
At 36 years of age, Atchison turned in a career best season. The right-handed reliever posted a 1.58 ERA across 51 1/3 innings of work with an excellent 4.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio. All three numbers are career bests for Atchison.
The Red Sox have several other players that are arbitration eligible this offseason, meaning the team will need to decide on which players to offer contracts to or make free agents, including Daniel Bard.
