Revolution Vs. Toronto: 2-2 The Final As Tierney Steals A Point At The Death

They left it late and made the fans sweat, but the New England Revolution scored with almost the last action of the match to draw 2-2 with Toronto FC at BMO Field on Saturday night. The draw improves the Revs record to 5-7-3, but leaves them still searching for their first ever win in Toronto.

Toronto took the lead early when Danny Koevermans took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Revs to power a header home at the far post. New England started to work back into the game after that, and wasted great chances due to the profligate finishing of Diego Fagundez and Kelyn Rowe.

It was the Reds who made the next breakthrough, however. Ashtone Morgan, who had success down the left flank for the whole first half, crossed to Ryan Johnson at the far post, who benefited from a dummy header by Koevermans to wrong-foot the Revs defense and put the ball in the back of the net.

New England came out flat in the second half but started to pull their way back into the game after changing from their usual flat 4-4-2 to an attacking 4-3-3. In the 71st minute, the move paid off. Benny Feilhaber ripped a half-volley on frame that Toronto keeper Milos Kocic spilled, allowing substitute Blake Brettschneider to swoop in and tuck it home.

As the end drew nearer, the Revs started peppering the Toronto goal and forcing the Reds further and further into a defensive shell. Chris Tierney forced another good save out of Kocic from a free kick, Saer Sene fired just off target from a great spot in the box, Feilhaber hit the post from just inside the area with a great low shot.

Finally, though, the Revs got the game-tying goal. Florian Lechner, who had a great second half against Ashtone Morgan on the flank, got down to the byline and floated in a cross. Tierney attacked it and drilled a header into the turf in front of goal and the ball then trickled in. The goal came four minutes into stoppage time, leaving Toronto just about no time to try and get the winner.
