Wes Welker Contract Situation: Less Than Two Weeks Until Deadline, Sides Reportedly Still Not Close

With less than two weeks remaining until the deadline for reaching an extension, the New England Patriots and Wes Welker are still far apart in their negotiations, according to a report from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

Sources with knowledge of this negotiation have believed for months that Welker would end up playing 2012 on the tag and that became even more clear when he signed it and joined offseason work a while back. It would take a fairly drastic turn of events to get off that track now.

Welker will play for the $9.5 million franchise tender this season if the two sides cannot come to an agreement prior to the July 16 deadline.

The 31-year old caught 122 passes for 1,569 yards and nine touchdowns last season.
