The deadline for the New England Patriots and All-Pro wide receiver Wes Welker is almost 24 hours away, and as zero-hour approaches it seems a deal will not get done as both sides are not actively talking, sources have told ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.
The source said that at this point, it would be a surprise if an extension was reached, but cautioned that things always could shift as the deadline approaches.
According to Reiss, Welker, a franchise tagged player, and the Patriots are trying to avoid a situation where the wide out plays under a one-year tender. Under the tender Welker will make $9.5 million and cannot work on an extension until after the 2012-13 season. If the Patriots decided to franchise Welker again, he will make $11.4 million -- a price New England may not be able to afford.
