The death of 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker Junior Seau has been ruled a suicide, according to a report from NBC's San Diego affiliate.
A source within the Oceanside, California police department confirmed to NBC San Diego that Seau committed suicide. The North County Times reports that Seau died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police responded to a call at Seau's home in Oceanside at 9:35 a.m. on Wednesday.
In 2010, hours after he was released from custody after being arrested on a domestic abuse charge, Seau survived driving his car off a cliff. He claimed at the time that it was not a suicide attempt and that he simply fell asleep.
TMZ reported earlier Wednesday that Seau text messaged his ex-wife and three kids on Tuesday to tell them,"I love you." His family members reportedly had no inkling that anything was wrong and did not suspect Seau of any depression in recent weeks.
