Wes Welker signed his franchise tender with the New England Patriots earlier this week with the knowledge that he was giving away any leverage he had in contract discussions. He said he was making a leap of faith and trusting the Patriots to do the right thing.
But so far, Welker told the Boston Herald Thursday, contracts talks have "gotten worse."
"There have been talks, but nothing that's brightened anything at all," Welker said. "It's actually gotten worse."
When asked to define "worse," Welker said the offer on the table is less than the two-year, $16 million fully guaranteed contract that was offered to him during the 2011 regular season.
Welker and the club have until June 16 to agree to a longer contract. If no agreement has been made by that date, Welker will play this season under the franchise tender of $9.5 million.
