Safety James Sanders Cut By Patriots

With the dreaded cut days approaching in the NFL, there are always a few surprises, and today was no exception. ESPNBoston.com is reporting Patriots safety James Sanders was cut today by the team after being injured for the majority of training camp and only playing a limited role in Saturday's loss to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

↵

Sanders said that he wasn't given a reason that he was cut, only that he was cut at that time so he could pick his own team to join rather than being traded somewhere else.

↵

The veteran safety played all six seasons with the Patriots and was totally caught off guard by the move.

↵

"It was a shock. It wasn't one of the things I was expecting to hear today. It didn't cross my mind," Sanders said earlier..

↵

Sanders injured his hamstring prior to training camp and hadn't practiced at all until this past week where it was thought that he would resume his duties as the starting free safety next to pro-bowler Brandon Meriweather.
