Patriots Looked Into WR Plaxico Burress

Plaxico Burress catching passes from Tom Brady? It was a possibility this offseason, according to Bill Belichick, who said that he and the New England Patriots did their 'due diligence' and looked into Burress, a free agent at the time.

"We did look at him in the offseason, just because of his general availability as we normally do - look at all the players that are not connected with a team," Belichick said on a conference call with reporters. "We look at everybody. Obviously, you don't get everybody. Some things come together, some don't. We'll work with what we've got. They'll work with what they've got, see how it goes." (via WEEI)

Burress wound up signing a one-year, $3.017 million deal with the New York Jets, the very same team that the Pats will host on Sunday at Gillette Stadium. In three games with the Jets, Burress has 10 catches for 160 yards and four touchdowns. Burress has 8.005 career receiving yards and 57 touchdowns on 515 catches in 132 games.

Burress served 22 months on a gun charge at the Oneida Correctional Facility in Rome, New York from September of 2009 through June of 2011. Prior to this season, Burress had not played in the NFL since the 2008 season and was part of the 2007 New York Giants team that defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
