Boy, That Escalated Quickly: Jets' Bart Scott Threatens Patriots' Wes Welker Over Foot Comments

The war of words between the New England Patriots and New York Jets has leapt from amusing to dangerous.

Jets linebacker Bart Scott took issue with Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker's joking hints during a press conference on Thursday. During the conference, Welker tried to pack in as many references to toes and feet as a nod to Jets head coach Rex Ryan's alleged foot fetish, but never referenced it outright.

Scott then told New York newspaper Newsday that he and his teammates were appalled with Welker's statements:

"I’ll tell you what. Be very careful what you say about our coach. [Welker’s] days in a uniform will be numbered. Put it like that."

The jabs between the Jets and Pats have now caused the league to intervene. According to WEEI's Patriots reporter Christopher Price, the NFL's executive vice president for football operations, Ray Anderson, contacted playoff teams this week to point out that off-field comments are often considered when on-field offenses worth fines or suspensions occur.

NFL intervention or no, Scott himself may not be in a position to make such a huge statement. In a tweet Saturday afternoon, the Boston Globe's Chad Finn pointed out that Scott's threats may be full of hot air:

"Bart Scott had one sack this season, is 30 years old, and is due approximately $26 mil the next four years. Whose days are numbered again?"
