Harvard and Northeastern couldn't get the job done in the semifinal round of the 2012 Beanpot, but the two will go face to face as they try to clinch third place in the tournament as they meet in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m. EDT on Monday night at TD Garden in Boston, MA (TV/Radio: NESN/95.3 FM).
The Crimson and Huskies have met 97 times, with Harvard leading the series 64-33-0. However, the Huskies are riding a three-game winning streak against the Huskies. The last win for Harvard came on Feb. 4, 2008, ironically, in the semifinal round of the Beanpot at TD Banknorth Garden. Northeastern's last win came on Feb. 14, 2011 -- a 4-0 Huskies rout.
Harvard lost to Boston University, 3-1, in the semifinal round of the Beanpot last Monday. Alex Killorn lit the lamp for the only Crimson goal while goaltender Steve Michalek had 14 saves before being pulled for Raphael Girard, who had eight saves in the loss. The Crimson, who have won 10 Beanpot titles and have finished third 14 times, are now 49-70 in the Beanpot.
Northeastern, meanwhile, was shellacked by Boston College, 7-1, in its Beanpot opener. Anthony Beitetto had the only goal of the game for the Huskies on a 5-on-3 power play midway through the first period. Chris Rawlings had 16 saves in two periods and was replaced by Clay Witt, who made 15 stops, all of which came in the third period or Northeastern. The Huskies have only won four Beanpot titles, have finished third 16 times and are a tournament-worst 34-85 overall.
Both teams played one game each in between Beanpot games. The Huskies fell to the University of New Hampshire, 3-2, on Friday. Robbie Vrolyk scored his fourth goal of the season, and the first of the game, while Mike McLaughlin scored the Huskies second and final goal in the third period. Rawlings had 28 saves while allowing three goals.
The Crimson are coming off a 2-2 tie against Rensselaer on Friday. Alex Fallstrom and Luke Grenier scored the only goals of the game for Harvard, which got a 27-save performance from Girard in the draw.
