From the First Four to the Final Four, VCU's journey to the top is almost complete.
Jamie Skeen scored 26 points and collected nine rebounds as No. 11 seed Virginia Commonwealth shocked No. 1 seed Kansas, winning 71-61 in the Southwest Regional finals in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday afternoon.
Marcus Morris' layup with 14:17 left in the first half put Kansas up 10-9, but the Rams went on a 20-11 run to take a 39-21 lead with 3:52 left in the opening half. The Jayhawks cut their deficit to 14 at halftime, trailing 41-27.
Kansas opened up the second half with a 12-2 run to cut VCU's lead to four points, but the Rams asserted their dominance and rebuilt the lead to 57-47 with 8:53 remaining. VCU held Kansas in check for the remainder of the game, scoring 14 points while allowing 14 points in the final nine minutes to seal the win.
Brandon Rozzell finished with 12 points off the bench for VCU, which made 21-of-53 field goals (39.6 percent). Joey Rodriguez and Bradford Burgess both scored nine points for the Rams.
Morris finished with 20 points off the bench for Kansas, which struggled on the offensive end, shooting 35.5 percent on 22-of-62 shooting. Markieef Morris had 13 points and nine rebounds, but turned the ball over eight times. Tyshawn Taylor added 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the loss for the Jayhawks.
