Boston Celtics center Fab Melo has been assigned to the club's NBA Developmental League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws, according to an announcement made by the team on Wednesday morning.

Melo was selected by the Celtics with the No. 22 overall selection in the 2012 NBA Draft and played in all eight of the team's preseason games, averaging 1.3 rebounds in 5.9 minutes per game. However, he has yet to see any time in the regular season through the team's first seven games.

It was expected that the franchise was going to assign Melo to the Red Claws as general manager Danny Ainge stated at the beginning of November that the club hoped to give the 7'0 center more playing time. Since he began playing basketball later in life, the franchise viewed the NBA Developmental League as the perfect arena to give him the neccessary instruction to develop into a productive piece for the future.

In addition, the Celtics announced that 2012 second round pick Kris Joseph had also been assigned to the Red Claws.
