The Red Sox took a 2-1 advantage into the ninth, but the Athletics were the ones to finally capitalize on their late-inning opportunities, scoring twice in the final frame to knock the Sox off with a 3-2 walkoff win.
Both the Athletics and Red Sox got off to quick scoring starts, with Jon Lester giving up a solo shot to Coco Crisp to leadoff the game and Jarrod Saltalamacchia making up for it with a homer of his own in the second.
From there both Lester and Colon settled down, with Lester surrendering just another couple of hits through two outs in the seventh while racking up nine strikeouts. Colon responded in kind, finishing the sixth without any extra damage being done.
Then came the wasted opportunities for each side. In both the top of the eighth and top of the ninth, the Sox would put their first two baserunners on. The eighth would go awry due to strikeouts from Cody Ross and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, while the ninth was ruined by terrible fundamentals, with a bunt being popped up for a double play and Ryan Kalish making the last out at third on a caught stealing.
The Athletics had wasted a bases loaded situation in the eighth, but they came through in the ninth. With leadoff hits putting two men on with one out, a Brandon Moss single scored the equalizing run and moved the winning run to third, with a Coco Crisp sacrifice fly proving enough for a walkoff win.
