Will Middlebrooks Named AL Rookie Of The Week

Boston Red Sox rookie third baseman Will Middlebrooks was named the American League Rookie of the Week for the period ending June 24.

In his last six games, Middlebrooks was hitting a blistering .625 (10-16) with three doubles, three home runs, 10 RBI and scored six runs. He led the American League for the week in batting average, slugging percentage (1.375), on-base percentage (.632) and total bases (22). The hot week boosted his average to .326 and gives him 10 doubles, nine home runs and 34 RBI on the season. The Red Sox have lost just once in their last six games.

Middlebrooks was drafted by the Red Sox in 2007 in the fifth round of the MLB Draft. He was promoted to the big league team from the minors in May 2012 after Kevin Youkilis was placed on the disabled list with a back injury. Youkilis has since been traded and Middlebrooks is playing like the Red Sox third baseman of the future he was projected to be.
