The Philadelphia Phillies deafeated the Boston Red Sox, 6-4, on Friday night, taking game one of a three game interleague series. Philadelphia scored four runs in the first and never surrendered the lead. Daniel Bard lasted five innings, giving up five runs on three hits while throwing 94 pitches. Cole Hamels gave up three runs in seven innings for Philly.
Boston lost catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the bottom of the fifth inning, when a pitch ricocheted off Philadelphia's Ty Wigginton, then off Saltalamacchia's arm, finally hitting him in the side of the head. Bleeding from the ear, he was pulled from the game.
Boston's offensce came on three home runs, one each from Mike Aviles, Cody Ross, and Alex Gonzales. Daniel Nava picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, but their combined efforts would be not be enough. Former Red Sox closerJonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for the Phillies, giving up only one hit while closing the game against his former team. Game two of the series is Saturday evening, with the first pitch at 7:15pm.
