According to a major league source close to WEEI's Rob Bradford, the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement with right handed starting pitcher Aaron Cook, pending a physical. His deal is reportedly a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training.
Cook, 32, is coming off an injury plagued 2011 campaign with the Colorado Rockies, where he went 3-10 with a 6.03 ERA in 97 innings pitched. Cook battled a right finger injury for the majority of last season. Despite his struggles last season, he may be of some use to the Red Sox
Because of a limited budget, the Red Sox have been forced to sign low cost options to fill the holes on their roster (see Nick Punto, Kelly Shoppach, Carlos Silva). With starting pitching their main concern, they appear to be comfortable with just signing a plethora of low cost veterans and let them compete for the final spot in the rotation.
Cook's best season came in 2008, when he went 16-9 with a 3.96 ERA in 211.1 innings logged. In addition to this, he also turned in a solid 2009 campaign (11-6 4.16 ERA). So if you are a Red Sox fan know two things: Aaron Cook is no slouch and that by no means, are the Red Sox done signing starting pitchers.
