To complete the Cody Ross free agent contract, the Boston Red Sox had to make some room on their roster in order to have the outfielder on their 40-man roster. They've kept us in suspense about what they were going to do. A big trade involving Gavin Floyd or yet, Matt Garza? Nope, just a DFA.
According to Comcast Sportsnet New England, the Red Sox announced that pitcher Scott Atchison had been designated for assignment in order to make room for Cody Ross. Atchison is now a free agent and is free to sign with any team he pleases.
Atchison was signed by the Red Sox prior to the start of the 2010 season after a three year stint in Japan. In his two seasons with Boston, Atchison was 3-3 with a 4.08 ERA in just over 90 innings logged. The possibility remains for the Red Sox to bring back Atchison on a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training.
