Red Sox 0, Athletics 0, End 1: Erik Bedard Struggles With Control, Escapes Trouble In First

Erik Bedard walked the bases loaded, but escaped trouble with a key ground ball to leave the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader scoreless after one.

Bedard didn’t have any help from behind the plate, with a good half of his pitches in the zone being called for balls, but the fact that only made for three incorrect calls is pretty telling. Luckily, the three walks he allowed were the only runners to reach base, and the sequencing was not such that the Athletics could manufacture a run. A ground ball off the bat of Scott Sizemore was fielded cleany at short, and the Athletics stranded all three men.
