Mike Cameron was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox on Thursday afternoon, and the team has called up infielder Yamaico Navarro to take his place.
With the DFA, the Red Sox now have 10 days to rid themselves of Cameron, unless he accepts the assignment.
The Red Sox have 10 days to try and trade Cameron while putting him through waivers. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein suggested there is a slim chance the outfielder could accept an assignment to the minors if Cameron were to pass through waivers, not get dealt, and accept such a move. Navarro has spent time with the Red Sox before, playing 20 games with the team last season. Navarro had a batting average of .143 (6-for-42) and drove in five runs with Boston.
In Pawtucket, Navarro is batting .258 with five home runs and 13 RBI. In six minor league seasons, Navarro has a .280 batting average with 41 homers and 255 RBI.
