CHESTNUT HILL - Chase Rettig and the Boston College Eagles got off to the fast start they had hoped for, putting up 10 unanswered points in the first 15 minutes as BC took a 10-0 lead over the UMass Minutemen after one quarter.
BC picked off UMass quarterback Kellen Pagel on the first play of the game, as Hampton Hughes grabbed the interception and set the Eagles up with prime field position. BC used Andre Williams to take the ball to the UMass one yard line. Williams had eight rushes on the drive. Rettig fooled the defense on a beautiful play action pass and found Lars Anderson in the back right corner of the endzone. The drive lasted 5:35 and saw BC go 47 yards on 11 plays.
Nate Freese then hit a 26-yard field goal from the left has mark - where he missed a potential game-winning field goal one week before in a 20-19 loss to Duke - to put the Eagles up 10-0 with 2:25 left in the quarter.
