Malcolm Grant scored 16 points and Miami outscored Virginia 25-7 in the final 5:42 as the ninth-seeded Hurricanes defeated the eighth-seeded Cavaliers in overtime, 69-62, on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the 2011 ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
Miami (19-13) advances to face No. 1 seed North Carolina in the quarterfinal round on Friday afternoon in Greensboro. The Hurricanes trailed by ten, 53-43, with 42 seconds left in regulation, but went on a 10-0 run to force overtime. Miami outscored Virginia, 16-9, in the extra period to claim victory.
Juilan Gamble finished with 11 points and Durand Scott and Garrius Adams both had 10 points for the Hurricanes, who shot 39.1% from the field and 34.5% beyond the arc.
Mustapha Farrakhan scored 14 points and had five rebounds to lead Virginia, which shot 40% from the field and from three-point range. Sammy Zeglinski added 13 points and Assane Sene had nine points and nine rebounds. Jontel Evans and K.T. Harrell both had nine points off the bench for Virginia.
