Charley Molnar Hired As New UMass Football Head Coach

Charley Molnar will lead the UMass Minutemen football team into its first season at the FBS-level, as the current Notre Dame offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach was hired as the new head football coach on Wednesday.

Charley Molnar, who is currently serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, has reportedly been hired as the new head football coach of the UMass Minutemen.

Molnar was offered the job by UMass athletic director John McCutcheon, and accepted the offer according to sources of Jeff Wagenheim of The Boston Globe. UMass is coming off of a disappointing 5-6 season under former head coach Kevin Morris in the school's final FCS season.

The Minutemen will make the jump to the FBS level next season and will play in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). In addition, UMass will play its home games at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, next season and beyond.

Molnar has served as the Fighting Irish's offensive coordinator for the past two seasons under second-year coach Brian Kelly and has spent 12 seasons as an offensive coordinator and 18 years as a quarterbacks coach in college football.
