Chase Rettig and the Boston College Eagles head down south to face the Miami Hurricanes in a rematch of Doug Flutie's famous Hail Mary touchdown pass in the regular season finale at 3:00 p.m. EDT on Friday afternoon at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida (TV/Radio: ABC/WEEI).
Firday's game comes 27 years and two days after the unforgettable Haily Mary pass from Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie to Gerard Phelan on the final play of the game that gave the Eagles a 47-45 win over the defending national champion Hurricanes on November 23, 1984 Flutie went on to win the Heisman Trophy and his pass is considered one of the greatest moments in college football history.
Boston College (3-8, 2-5 ACC) has only defeated Miami four times in program history, going 4-23 against the Hurricanes in 27 total meetings. Miami had won 15 straight games against BC from 1985 through 2006, but the Eagles snapped that streak in their last meeting, winning 28-14 on November 24, 2007. Miami is 14-1 in home games against BC.
The Eagles are coming off a tightly contested 16-14 loss to the rival Notre Dame Fighting Irish last Saturday. Chase Rettig threw for 170 yards and a late touchdown in the loss. Rettig's late score brought the Eagles within two with just under two minutes to go, but BC couldn't recover the onside kick.
Rettig has thrown for 1,758 yards and 10 touchdowns this season to lead the BC passing attack. Rolandan Finch is the team's leading rusher with 609 rushing yards and three scores while Colin Larmond Jr. leads all receivers with 530 yards and three touchdowns on 34 catches.
Miami (6-5, 3-4 ACC) has hit an up-and-down patch in recent weeks, winning only two of its last four games. In last Saturday's game against the South Florida Bulls, the Hurricanes managed to squeak out a 6-3 win. Jake Wieclaw made a 26-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 36-yard field goal with time expiring in the fourth to seal the win.
Jacory Harris, the Hurricanes' starting quarterback, threw for 259 yards in the loss and has now thrown for 2,241 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. Lamar Miller is Miami's leading rusher with 1,158 yards on the ground and eight touchdowns on 215 carries. Tommy Streeter is the team's leading receiver with 41 catches for 764 yards and eight scores.
Despite the Hurricanes notching their sixth win, the school announced that they will be vacating their bowl berth in light of the preseason scandal that included school officials and recruiters giving student athletes improper benefits.
