Virginia Tech, the 2010 ACC champion, will face Stanford in the Discover Orange Bowl Jan. 3 at 8:30 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast by ESPN.
Earlier on Sunday there was much speculation that the Orange Bowl would pick Connecticut, the Big East champion, to meet the Hokies, but in the end, they opted for the better team. UConn is instead headed to the Fiesta Bowl, where they will face Oklahoma, champs of the Big 12.
Though UConn earned an automatic bid, they were just 8-4 this season, with losses to to Temple and Rutgers. The Cardinal, meanwhile, went 11-1 with that one loss to Oregon, who will meet Auburn for the national championship.
Stanford finished No. 4 in the final BCS rankings; UConn was not in the top-25.
