NBA Free Agency Rumors 2012: Jason Terry Giving Mavericks Chance To Counter Celtics' Offer, But 'Not Optimistic' They'll Match

Free agent guard Jason Terry told Chris Tomasson of Fox Sports Tuesday that he could sign with the Boston Celtics by the end of the night.

Terry will give the Dallas Mavericks a chance to counter the three-year, $15.7 million deal that the Celtics offered him on Tuesday, but said he is "not optimistic" that he will be able to work anything out with his former team. The Mavericks are cap-conscious as they continue to pursue a second superstar to team with Dirk Nowitzki.

Terry, 34, explained the draws that have brought him to the verge of signing a contract with Boston.

"I just love that they have a championship pedigree. And I think their point guard (Rajon Rondo) is the best in the business at controlling both ends of the floor. And they've got Hall of Famers.''
