The Boston Bruins issued an apology on Thursday after several fans used Twitter to direct racist comments at Joel Ward, whose game-winning overtime goal in Game 7 gave the series to the Washington Capitals.
"The Bruins are very disappointed by the racist comments that were made following the game last night. These classless, ignorant views are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization," read a statement issued on the Bruins' website, attempting to remove the Bruins from awful behavior in which some of their fans participated after Game 7.
After Ward, who is black, netted the game-winner, a handful of Bruins fans tweeted racist messages using the n-word to describe the Washington forward.
