With Monday evening's news that goaltender Tuukka Rask will miss four to six weeks due to an injury, the Boston Bruins signed veteran NHL netminder Marty Turco.
The Bruins announced the move in a press release early Monday evening. If Turco clears waivers, the Bruins will sign him to a one-year contract. Turco will be unable to play in the postseason because his official signing will be after the league's trade deadline.
The ten year NHL veteran had spent this year playing for EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian First Division, where he had a post-season stat line of 3.16 goals against average and .911 save percentage. Before his Austrian experience, Turco played 538 games for the Dallas Stars and Chicago Blackhawks, and amassed a 273-65-43 record. In his NHL career, the 36 year old has a .910 save percentage and a 2.35 goals against average. He holds several goaltending records for the Stars, including most wins and shutouts.
Turco was a 1994 NHL draft pick of the Stars, and played college hockey at the University of Michigan. In 1998, he backstopped the Wolverines to a national championship over Boston College at what is now the TD Garden (the Bruins' home ice.)
Turco has a high level of familiarity with a number of possible NHL opponents, as he has also spent time analyzing the game on the NHL Network.
