Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand's phone hearing with NHL head disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan at 12:30 p.m. on Monday to determine whether Marchand will receive additional discipline for a hit on Vancouver Canucks defenseman Sami Salo, WEEI's DJ Bean reported on Monday morning.
The fact that the hearing is on the phone is important: it means that any suspension would be five games or fewer.
The hit, which resulted in a Salo concussion, came in the second period of Boston's 4-3 loss to the Canucks on Saturday and drew an ejection from the game for Marchand. Marchand saw Salo skating toward him and ducked to initiate the hit.
"You look up and you see a guy who's 6 foot 4, 6 foot 5 coming in on you,'' Marchand said yesterday during a charity event at TD Garden. "Your instincts are to protect yourself. Very unfortunate that he was hurt on the play.''
