Versus is no more. According to a report from USA Today, the Versus network will be re-branded and called the "NBC Sports Network." The changes will take place as of January 2, 2012.

So much for the Versus name in TV sports. Comcast's NBC Sports Group will announce Monday that it's jettisoning the Versus moniker and changing the name of the cable channel to NBC Sports Network. The makeover, including a new peacock logo, takes effect Jan. 2. (via USA Today)

Bruins fans will remember the Versus network for a long time, as it carried a portion of the B's Stanley Cup Run during the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including a few games of the Stanley Cup Final between the Bruins and Canucks.

The move is far more than a name change, an NBC executive pointed out (via USA Today).

"This is more than just a name change for Versus," NBC Sports Group boss Mark Lazarus said in a statement. "It's a complete repositioning of the brand."
