BOSTON - Joe Pavelski scored his fourth goal of the season, assisted by former Bruin Joe Thornton, to give the San Jose Sharks a 1-0 lead over the Boston Bruins which would hold through the end of the first period at TD Garden.
Pavelski's goal, a wrister from Tim Thomas' left side, was scored at the 1:12 mark. The assist was Thornton's third on the season and gave him at least one point in each of the last three games for the Sharks.
Boston had 14 shots in the first period while San Jose registered 10 shots. There were two penalties in the period, with Andrew Desjardins receiving a two-minute minor for boarding at 2:08 and Zdeno Chara received a two-minute minor for interference at 11:12. Both teams were 0-for-1 on the power play in the opening period.
So far, it's been a pretty evenly played game, despite the score. Boston has certainly had its chances, with a lot of second chance opportunities being presented to them, but they haven't been in the right place at the right time. San Jose has applied pressure on Tim Thomas, who has nine saves, as well.
Certainly a lot of time still left, but the Bruins will need to convert on these opportunities.
