Bruins Vs. Hurricanes: Pitkonen Goal Has Hurricanes Up 1-0 After 2 Periods

On the carryover power play from the first period, Yoni Pitkonen has the only goal of the game after two periods and it belongs to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The ’Canes forward scored the goal just 44 seconds into the second period (seven seconds remaining on the PP) by beating Tim Thomas from the side of the net while Eric Staal was shielding Thomas. Former Bruin Tomas Kaberle and Jussi Jokinen were credited with assists on the play.

The goal highlighted a bad second period for the Bruins who struggled against the Carolina forecheck throughout the period, turning over the puck in their own end repeatedly or being unable to maintain it in the offensive zone. The B’s also went 0-3 on the power play in the period, bringing their nightmarish start to 0-5 in the game and 1-18 on the season.

The only positive has been Tim Thomas who, despite allowing the soft goal early in the period, stood on his head repeatedly to keep it a one goal game.

Offensively the only quality chance the Bruins had in the period was on a shot from Rich Peverley that hit a Hurricanes player and skidded through the crease.
