The 32-team National Invitation Tournament field will be announced Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The NIT field is chosen from teams left out of the 68-team NCAA Tournament, with games in the first three rounds generally played at the home arena of the lower-seeded team.
Automatic bids in the NIT are given to teams that have won their conference regular season titles but lost their conference tournaments and were left out of the NCAA field. This year, that guarantees berths to Robert Morris, Long Beach State, Stony Brook, Mercer, Charleston Southern, Northeastern, Niagara, Norfolk State, and potentially NCAA Tournament bubble teams Middle Tennessee State and Louisiana Tech.
Northeastern will likely be joined in the NIT by UMass, which projects as a top seed and tournament favorite. Boston College is unlikely to make the NIT field despite a late-season push.
