Being Tom Brady's backup might be the most anonymous job in all of New England. Nevertheless, the battle to backup Brady has raged through the early weeks of the Patriots training camp. Second-year quarterback Ryan Mallett was once seen as a sure bet to leap Brian Hoyer on the depth chart, but the early reviews have some questioning that prediction.

Tom Curran of CSN New England did not have a positive update on the former University of Arkansas star.

"Ryan Mallett has an opportunity to lay claim to being the heir apparent to Tom Brady, and he just hasn't done it."

The Patriots play their first preseason game on Thursday night against the New Orleans Saints. Mallet and Hoyer should both get plenty of snaps to try and cement their case.

The 2012 Summer Olympics are filled with inspiring stories of athletes overcoming odds. Few have triumphed over adversity like Kayla Harrison, who won the gold medal in women's judo on Thursday.

Harrison could have easily quit judo after her early experiences. She was sexually abused by her coach as a youth. When that ordeal was over with, she doubled down on her commitment to the sport, finding it to be a means to heal, and moved to Wakefield, Ma., for an intensive training program. Her gold medal victory over Gemma Gibbons from Great Britain at the London Olympics makes for the perfect ending to one chapter and the start of another.

This was the first time in Olympic history that the United States won a gold medal in Judo.

Another event, another win for the American women's eight rowing team. Led by coxswain Mary Whipple, Team USA rowed its way to a gold medal on Thursday at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

The races runs for 2,000m. By the halfway point, the American team had a half a boat length lead over the Canadian team. Canada would finish second in the race, capturing the silver medal. The bronze medal went to the Netherlands. The gold medal gives the United State a total of 30, for now.

This was the second straight gold medal for the women's eight team. They have not lost a race in eight years, and were heavily favored for Thursday's.

The medal podium and final times for the event looked like this:

Gold: United States (6:10.59)

The Team USA women's basketball team won again on Wednesday. This time they beat the team from Turkey as a gaggle of players with deep roots in the Big East, including six from UConn, trounced their opponents in an 89-58 victory as pool play continued.

Louisville alum Angel McCoughtry stole the show in the win. The 2007 Big East Player of the Year and current Atlanta Dream forward scored 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds, six in the offensive zone, in the win. Tina Charles of the Connecticut Sun added 16 points in the effort. Lindsay Whalen scored 14, rounding out a trio of Team USA players in double figures.

The Turkish team, fresh off two straight wins, played a good game. They had a one-point lead in the first quarter and closed the gap to five points in the third, before McCoughtry helped put it away.

This was 36, consecutive wins, for the America women's basketball team in their Olympic history. If they win the gold medal, it will be the fifth in a row.

Team USA's next game is Friday against the Czech Republic. They wrap up pool play on Sunday against an undefeated Chinese team.

The Boston Celtics will learn their 20120-2013 season schedule on Thursday night.

The Boston Celtics came oh so close to a trip to the NBA Finals last season. In the end, they lost in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals to the Miami Heat, the eventual champions. On Thursday night, the Celtics will get a first look at the road map back to the postseason when the league releases the 2012-2013 NBA schedule.

One big detail about Boston's schedule has already leaked. They will open the season against the Heat on October 30 at American Airlines Arena in Miami. That will also be their first look at Ray Allen in a Heat uniform, sure to be a notable occasion in and of itself.

Boston re-signed Jeff Green while adding Jason Terry and Courtney Lee.

The NBA will release the 2012-2013 schedule at 7 p.m. on Thursday night in a prime time special on NBA TV.
